One of my favorite quotes is by John Kabat-Zin, “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”
The waves of change, even when needed, can create a sense of worry and dread. It is the unknown and the sense of loss that contributes to the anxiety. We learn to surf by navigating the waves of change while making the change fit our ultimate purpose. What is your purpose?
I consider it a privilege to work in the field of education. I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and adults. That is my purpose. I am proud of my 21 years in education and consider them to be years well spent. Over the years I have had to learn to surf the waves of change that are consistent in our field. It all comes back to the swimming pool analogy. When you first get into a pool, it doesn’t feel good. It feels cold. You question briefly should I get out, or why did I get in, but then, anticipating what’s ahead—the refreshing feeling of floating weightlessly in water—you hang in and are greatly rewarded. It feels good! Why? Did someone change the water, or warm it up? No, we adjusted.
So with change, we must be willing to feel that initial discomfort, ride it out and trust that we’ll adjust. We at Clinton faced a change recently. We were charged with changing the grading scale due to numerous circumstances in a short period of time. Well, we did it. And it was a team effort. Thank you. A special thanks to Teresa Plumlee, Stacy Pitts, Jamie McCoy, Sara Vaughn, Michelle Henzlik, Lisa Kaiser, the administrative team and the teachers who reached out to me during this transitional time.
Instructional Strategy
Sketch-to-Stretch
Background: Sketch-to-Stretch is an instructional strategy developed by Harste, Short, & Burke, (1988). Students draw quick sketches to stretch their thinking and understanding of concepts. This technique can be used in K-12, in a variety of ways and in any content area.
Procedures: After reading a selection, students draw sketches that illustrate key ideas and details. Students present their drawings to explain how they made connections with the information revealed in the text.
Examples: After reading a description of the nesting habits of hummingbirds, students draw a sketch that shows how they visualized the details: the place a nest would be found, the size of a hummingbird’s nest, materials used to build the nest, the number of eggs in a nest, the color of eggs, and how parent(s) of baby hummingbirds take care of their young. Students can draw a series of sketches to reveal the development of baby hummingbirds from egg to first flight.
Variations:
1. As a pre-reading activity, Sketch-to-Stretch is a strategy that helps students connect with prior knowledge. Students sketch ideas that show what they know about a topic featured in an upcoming selection.
2. Invite students to write captions (words, phrases, or sentences) for sketches.
3. When students work in small groups, Sketch-to-Stretch can be used to illustrate a series of events. For example, each person in a group sketches a different phase in the life cycle of a monarch butterfly.

This small blurb is for those of you who have the HSA plan for health insurance….
Did you know you can change your employee contribution at any point throughout the year? All you need to do is contact me for a payroll authorization form noting the amount you want to contribute.
Please remember, the IRS limits your yearly contributions. Click here to see the 2017 calendar year contribution limits.
Please note – contributions include not only what you have authorized for payroll deductions but also what the school district contributes, which is currently $78.60 a month.
Please contact me via email if you would like additional information.
Thanks!

IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL
Having Fun and Recognizing Great People at Clinton Early Childhood Center
Submitted by: Jake Kenney, Henry Elementary Assistant PrincipalOn Thursday, October 12th, the Clinton Early Childhood Center and Parents as Teachers held their 16th annual Farm Night. 195+ children attended this fun evening event as well as 105 families. A few of the activities included; a family hayride, tractor station, haystack scramble, pumpkin exploration, face painting, corn shucking and much much more!
There were smiles for miles during the event and everyone was seen having a great time. Thank you to the sponsors who made this event possible; Golden Valley Daycare, Moreland Daycare, Seeds of Faith Preschool, Clinton Head Start, Farmers Elevator and Supply Co, Heritage Tractor and Gary and Amanda Johnson.
Last month CECC had the opportunity to recognize a student, staff member and community partner. The student recognized at the Board of Education meeting was Heidi Morales. Heidi is a great friend to all students in the classroom. She is the first person to welcome new students to the class, and she is a hard worker. The staff member recognized was special education teacher Britnea Monaco. Britnea is always willing to go the extra mile with her students and parents. Mrs. Monaco is an exemplar teacher and is a valuable part of the CECC family. The community member recognized was Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare employee, Kelly Lasswell. Kelly became involved at CECC through the Bright Futures program. Kelly goes above and beyond in the community and finds unique ways to meet the needs of our community's children.
It's a Great Day to be a Cardinal at Clinton Early Childhood Center.
