By: Brandon Inman

What is Digital Citizenship?

Digital Citizenship is the responsible and respectful use of technology in our everyday lives of work and communication (Digital Citizenship). It is using technology to improve and enhance our lives and the world without knowingly causing harm to anyone or anything.

What does Digital Citizenship Involve?

Digital Citizenship consists of nine elements according to the site Digital Citizenship. In our class we will examine how to practice Digital Citizenship in the following areas:

Digital Access

While we have access to multiple forms of technology in our class such as laptops, ipads, and clickers, other schools and students in many places do not. Therefore, it is important to realize that we have an advantage over some schools and students and we should always be looking for ways to help ensure that more people are getting access to technology tools to increase their educational experiences.

Digital Commerce

The prevalence of technology and the Word Wide Web has made it easier now more than ever to locate things we want anywhere around the word and purchase them. As we use the internet to purchase items and engage in business online, it is important that we are doing so legally and taking precautions to protect our personal data.

Digital Communication

Digital Communication describes how we share information with other people on the web. The Internet allows us to connect with people around the world who otherwise, we would not contact in our daily lives. When communicating with other people, we should use technology for collaboration and to encourage positive relationships. Technology should not be used for harming other people or engaging in inappropriate activities.

Digital Literacy

Technology and the Internet have provided us with many tools that have made our lives easier and that allow us to develop creative works with limitless information. With all of the tools available to us, it is important to remember that we have to learn how to use these tools to obtain their full benefit as well as realize that it will take practice before we become technology tool pros!

Digital Etiquette

Just as we do not like people to be rude to us in person or not respect us, we must always remember to show respect when using technology tools. We must always use technology respectfully and be respectful to other people who we communicate with online. If we see behavior that is inappropriate or non-respectful, it is your duty to report it to a teacher, parent, or other trusted adult.

Digital Law

When using the Internet or other technology tools, always remember that there are rules which you must follow, even though no one may see what you do online in person. Accessing information is ways that you should not be doing so, posting threatening information, or creating something that could cause harm are not allowed, and you can be punished if you are found guilty of doing so.

Digital Security

The internet is a place where anyone can post information and can try to access information that does not belong to them. When using the internet and technology tools, always choose passwords that are not easily guessed, never give out personal information about yourself, and at anytime you feel you are at risk of being harmed, let an adult know immediately.
