Glacier Ridge Gazette
Principal’s Message
As we come to a close on the school year, we can reflect back on what we learned this year. Our goal each year is to continue to get better. We set goals and strive for them. However, our real goal is to continue to get better at what we do every day. There have been things that we have been great at; and there are things that we can do better next time. “Invested in Learning and Growth” is one of our driving forces at GRE, which is the growth mindset that we want our students to have. Looking at the areas of growth as opportunities to get better rather than failure is a mindset and motivator. More people are inspired by opportunities rather than failure. This type of mindset is captured well by Giannis Antetokounmpo, a star NBA player for the Milwaukee Bucks. They lost in the first round of the NBA finals this year. You can hear his response to a reporter’s question, “Do you view this year as a failure?” in THIS GREAT VIDEO.
In my last principal message next week, I will discuss a few most frequently asked questions or needs that I get from families. Specifically, I provide some resources for families and students over the summer. Also, I announce all of the staffing shifts for the 23-24 school year. Lastly, I provide some important back to school dates, although that may be too soon for some people.
Enjoy the last weekend before the long weekend of summer. As a staff we plan to use the summer to rejuvenate and recharge. The staff take advantage of professional development opportunities that are offered by the district. We are fortunate to have a district that also celebrates a growth mindset to foster a culture of lifelong learning. So, while we may not be with your children in the summer, we are certainly getting better and preparing for them, while at the same time, taking care of ourselves. I hope you do the same.
Have a great weekend,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D
Principal

In addition, lunch will be provided for our entire school by Jersey Mike’s.
*** PM Kindergarten Students***
You can drop-off your child in the car line at Glacier Ridge Elementary at 9:00 am on Tuesday, May 23rd. Staff will be available at the car drop off line to receive the PM students.
Your child will need to be picked up at 11:30am at GRE.
PM K students should return to school at their regular afternoon class time.
“On behalf of the staff and students of Glacier Ridge Elementary School, we are extremely honored and grateful to be the recipient of the Court of Creativity contest sponsored by Jersey Mike’s and the Harlem Globetrotters,” said Pete Kurty, Principal at Glacier Ridge Elementary School. “We are excited to celebrate as a whole school as the Globetrotters perform and then we are treated to a delicious Jersey Mike’s lunch. We would be remiss if we didn’t also celebrate the creativity of the teachers of the winning lesson submissions. Incorporating creativity into instruction is what great educators do every day. However, without the creativity, innovation, and collaboration of the 5th-grade teaching team and the music and physical education teacher, this experience would not be possible. Thank you to Jersey Mike’s and the Harlem Globetrotters for encouraging and promoting creativity and quality instruction in order to provide an amazing educational experience for students.”

We are excited to celebrate your child’s last day of elementary school with families on Friday, May 26th at Glacier Ridge Elementary School.
Promotion Ceremony:
Date: Friday, May 26, 2023
Location: GRE gymnasium
Time: 9:45 - 10:15 - All 5th grade classes
Doors open at 9:20. Families will not have access before that time.
Doors open at 9:20. The ceremony will last approximately one half hour. Chairs will be available for families to sit during the ceremony. Speeches will be delivered by the principal and the GRE PTO senior scholarship winner. Each 5th grade student will have their name read and receive their promotion certificate. All 5th grade students will end the ceremony with the GRE school song and then be briefly available for whole grade pictures. Pictures of individual students, friend groups, and staff can be taken after the bell ringing ceremony.
Clap-out: Immediately after the promotion ceremony (10:15)
Location: Families will form a tunnel in the commons and main hall. After students march through, families will exit the front of the building to meet their child for the bell ringing ceremony. 5th grade students will continue to make their way through the hallways of the school, ending in the front of the building by the bell.
Bell Ringing: Immediately after the clap-out
Location: Front of the GRE building (outdoors)
Following the clap-out, families will proceed out the front of the building. Students will be led by their teacher to the front of the building to meet up with families and ring the ceremonial 5th grade bell.
Bell Ringing - Inclement weather plan: The bell ringing ceremony will still occur in inclement weather, unless it is severe storms or rain. Families should bring umbrellas and dress accordingly to stand outside for the brief amount of time it will take to get through each student. If the ceremony cannot occur, families are welcome to return to GRE to ring the bell and take pictures at their convenience.
Miscellaneous Information:
Student sign out: There will be student sign-out sheets, organized by class, at the guest sign-in table. If you plan to take your child with you following the bell ringing ceremony, you are welcome to sign out your child prior to the promotion ceremony. If you do not sign them out prior to the ceremony, you can do so in the office afterward. If students are not being signed out, they will go home as they normally do at 12:25 dismissal. If you wish to sign out any other grade level students, you will need to do that in the office.
