COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH'S AMATEUR RADIO CLUB MAKES CONTACT WITH INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION
After months and months of detailed planning, Council Rock South's Amateur Radio Club was able to successfully make contact with the International Space Station at approximately 12:55 PM yesterday. The amazing contact was made possible by the ARISS program, an international consortium of amateur radio organizations and space agencies including National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Working with local Ham radio experts, students were able to coordinate conversation with ISS astronaut Dr. Andrew Morgan. The connectivity occurred exactly at the time that the ISS was situated over our area. For approximately ten minutes, students talked back and forth with Dr. Morgan, asking a series of questions about his time on the ISS, the importance of space exploration, and his view from up so high.

CHURCHVILLE AND WRIGHTSTOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ENJOY ONE BOOK TWO SCHOOLS AUTHOR VISIT
Thanks to a CREF grant, Churchville and Wrightstown Elementary Schools have been part of a One Book TWO Schools program that kicked off in September. Each family was given a copy of Caldecott Honor medal winner Peter Brown's book, The Wild Robot, to read together, following a shared reading calendar. At school, students had many opportunities to chat about the book and explore it through activities. Each class kept a nature journal, which circulated among students, giving families a chance to get outside and observe the world like Roz the robot did! Fourth-grade classes from both schools connected as pen pals and e-pals, sharing videos, slides, and letters about themselves and the book!
To culminate the shared reading experience, each school hosted a visit before, the Thanksgiving holiday, with Peter Brown. During his presentations, he shared some behind-the-scenes stories and images for The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, My Teacher is a Monster (No I Am Not) or Mr. Tiger Goes Wild. Students and staff loved hearing about how he became a writer, illustrator, and learning how he draws Roz the robot and his other characters. One winner from each grade level at both schools won a signed copy of the sequel, The Wild Robot Escapes. It is clear from the excitement and success of the One Book program that many families are planning to continue reading about Roz's adventures, as well as sharing other books together!
