Kid President's Guide To Being Awesome
We've learned 50 of Kid President's 100 ways to Be More Awesome! Number 50 was to write letters, which reminded kids that all it takes is a small act of kindness to make a big difference in someone's life.
Language Arts
This week, students wrapped up part 1 of Charlotte's Web. We had a little fun with partner reading, and recorded ourselves reading in selfie mode! Students are uploading their videos to Seesaw so you can see them reading in school! They took a comprehension quiz on it today. I will send it home next week. Students focused on character analysis, setting, plot, visualizing, vivid language, and text structure in part 1. We will continue working on comprehension strategies when we begin part 2 next week.
On to Multiplication!
Students took their Chapter 3 Math Test on Subtraction this week and are very excited to move on to multiplication! We will begin with a pre-assessment to determine what each student already knows about multiplication. From there, we will explore the many different ways to model multiplication. This will help students understand exactly what multiplication is, rather than just memorizing facts. I sent home a letter about Chapter 4 last week. Please be sure to look it over, practice the vocabulary with your child, and practice multiplication at home. Ask your child, if there are 4 grapes on each plate and there are 3 plates, how many grapes are there in all? Ask them so explain it using repeated addition, arrays, and multiplication! See how many different vocabulary words they can use in their explanations! Have fun!
STEM
We learned about some simple machines this week in STEM through the story, Aisha Makes Life Easier. So far we have been introduced to the pulley and a wheel and axle. Students have learned that simple machines make a job easier by decreasing the amount of force required to move an object. They also learned that larger machines are made up of subsystems of simple machines, such as a car. Students went on a scavenger hunt in our school for simple machines, and explained how they thought each one made work easier. Their explanations can be found on Seesaw!
