Tumuaki Kōrero
Kia ora e te whānau,
Despite Covid challenges, our learners have experienced a positive start to the school year focusing on their learning and enjoying challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. The Goal Setting conversations in Week 1 of next term are a good opportunity for you to hear about your child’s learning aspirations and, with their kaiako (teacher), plan ways that you can support them. Please book your meeting using the link further on in this newsletter.
Our EOTC days have been highly successful and I would like to thank all of our wonderful parent and whānau volunteers for giving their time and energy to ensure that these days could go ahead. We have been very lucky with the weather as all teams have managed to complete all of their activities. Learner feedback has been very positive and a highlight of their term.
Back in the classroom, our Primary Years Programme has provided some great opportunities for discussion and discovery for our learners. In particular, the topic of puberty and the cow eye dissections have been highly engaging. More about our next Unit of Inquiry can be found in this newsletter, along with a report from our “Rimu Roving Reporters.”
Our updated Covid Health and Safety Plan will be available at the start of Term 2. We are still in the process of reviewing and updating our current plan. We want to ensure that we incorporate all the elements that reflect the Ministry advice and guidelines we have received over the past few weeks and will receive this week.
Sandy Harford and I would like to thank our TNIS whānau, kaiāko (teachers), support staff, ākonga (learners), parents and the wider community for their support over this past term. Your patience and understanding as we have navigated through the challenges that Omicron has given us has been greatly appreciated.
Finally, this is my last “Tumuaki Kōrero” as Acting Principal. TNIS staff are very much looking forward to welcoming Zane Wilson, our new Tumuaki (Principal) on the first day of next term. Our Board of Trustees are organising two events for you to meet Zane in person and online. Please see the information about registering for these events below.
Noho pai, tiaki i a koutou ano (stay well and look after yourselves),

Meet Our New Principal - Zane Wilson
Dear Parents, Caregivers in the TNIS community,
The Board of Trustees would like to personally invite you to attend a special event to meet our new Principal, Zane Wilson.
Zane is excited to begin his engagement with the wider school community when he arrives in Term 2, so we have scheduled two events.
There will be an in-person wine and cheese evening (operating within Covid19 health guidelines) at 6pm on Tuesday 10th May, and an online event for those who feel more comfortable meeting remotely at 7pm on Thursday 19th May.
Please REGISTER NOW to secure your place.
This is YOUR opportunity to meet Zane and hear what attracted him to the school, his background and his vision for our school in the years ahead.
Please do not miss this unique opportunity to meet Zane as a new chapter begins at Takapuna Normal Intermediate School.
To ensure that we prioritise any topics or questions you may have, please feel free to list questions as you register your attendance.
Ngā mihi,
TNIS Board of Trustees

Unit of Inquiry - Who We Are - Update, Term 1, 2022
Over the past two weeks, learners have been involved in a provocation for our new Unit of Inquiry - Who We Are. A provocation is an experience that aims to ignite learners’ interests and create excitement and engagement for the inquiry we are about to embark on. Our latest inquiry centres around the ‘human body’ and ‘what it means to be human’. Our provocation this time round has been “cow eye dissections”. Learners were able to dissect a cow's eye, look at the anatomy of the eye and learn about the functions of each part including the iris, pupil, retina and optic nerve. It was definitely a "bit gross" for some but it was great to see so many learners being risk-takers and getting stuck in even when they were hesitant at first. Lots of new wonders and thoughts have come as a result of this provocation; who knows where they will lead to!
Rimu Roving Reporters - PYP Update
Hello TNIS community. We are the Rimu Roving Reporters. Our first Unit Of Inquiry (UOI) this year was, How We Express Ourselves. The Central Idea that helped focus and supports our learning was, “Cultures, beliefs, and values are shared across generations." In this topic, we learned about how our history has shaped who we are, how New Zealand heritage has evolved, and how cultures and Kiwiana stereotypes have given us a New Zealand identity.
Causation, Change, and Perspective were the three concepts that gave our inquiry direction and challenged us to question and think more deeply.
Focusing on the Causation concept, helped us see how our traditions, cultures, and history, influence our present identity. Different cultures impact our values and actions. Families' histories often created traditions that are adapted throughout generations. All of these factors add up to our identity
The Change concept led us to learn how Aotearoa New Zealand’s bi-cultural heritage has evolved and how many different cultures from around the world have blended to create a diverse country. After hunting through our personal and NZ history, we felt that maybe new Kiwiana symbols should now replace the old ones as our identity is changing.
Through discussing the perspective and traditions with our grandparents and parents, we learned that Kiwiana gives us a feeling of who we are. Some people think of Kiwis based on stereotypes. To reflect what New Zealand truly is today, Kiwiana should be common to us all. How we view ourselves is important, and old stereotypes don't reflect Aotearoa New Zealand or our identity.
Rimu Roving Reporters - Harry Smith, Eva Makarova-Paton, Joesph Lee
Summative Task
Our Kiwiana project represented the overall changes of Kiwiana over generations. Our idea was to symbolise Kiwiana by showing it as a bridge that needs to be repaired every generation or two. As new cultures came to New Zealand the Kiwiana became outdated and change was required to fix the bridge with new Kiwiana. We created our animation using Scratch to show our learning that cultures can mix and merge easily to express their traditions to make and shape our New Zealand identity.
Ryan Lapuste and Archie McPherson
Summative Task
To pass on our message we created a Tukutuku which is Maori weaving that is used in Maraes to tell stories of past generations. We weaved in our personal cultures and heritages to form combined values and how they have shaped our identities alongside the Maori cultural patterns to represent us all being ‘kiwis’. The middle of our Tukutuku pattern showed our perspective of NZ’s changing identity through expressing our 2022 Kiwiana icons.
