It's the Little Things
This award came with a spot on the local news, as well as a gift card for $319 for Mrs. Harris. However, the best thing that Mrs. Harris received from this award was the recognition and appreciation for the things she does each day for her students. When we think about teaching, there are so many big things involved from lesson preparation and delivery, assessments, grading papers....and the list could go on and on. But the real truth is that parents and student expect those things. After all, it is part of the job of teaching.
Mrs. Harris received this nomination from a parent, not for the big things she does at her job each day, but for the little things she did in the life of a child that made a difference! It could have been for going the extra mile by staying after school to help the child understand a concept or providing extra practice work to ensure the student felt confident in their abilities. It could have been calling to check on the child when she was absent from school, giving her a dollar when she forgot her snack money, or providing her a pencil when she couldn't find one. It could have been taking the extra time to keep the parent updated on the progress of the student or providing extra encouragement to the student when they needed it the most. It might have even been just a friendly smile each morning so that the student felt welcome, appreciated, and loved.
Although we may never know the full impact we have each day on students, we do know it is the little things that make the most impact. It is those things that make students remember their teacher. We have often heard the quote "At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel." I couldn't agree more.
I congratulate Mrs. Harris on her wonderful award and also want to thank all of you for what you do each day with our students. The impact you make each day is limitless and profound. The power is within each of you to change lives with the "little" things you do each day!
