Letter from Ms. Smith
Dear Hawk Family,
I hope your family enjoyed the nice long weekend. We have had a short but very productive week. Teachers and Parents met on Tuesday to discuss your students progress so far this semester. If you haven't signed up for a conference yet, sign up as soon as possible.
I wanted to welcome our new Title I Parent Liaison, Lucy Gilbert. She will be able to answer all your questions around Title I. Please review the article below to have a better understanding of the role of Title I at Hembree Springs. Included with the article are the School Parent and Family Engagement Plan (PFEP), and the School-Family Compacts. This is follow up to the information sent home in Friday Folders last week. Contact mailto:gilbertl2@fultonschools.org
Again, a few reminders:
1) The date changed for Ask PTA to October 26th at 7PM: Click here to join the meeting. Since It is Literacy Month this is a great opportunity to learn what our school supports Literacy and how you can help at home.
2) The Café is short staffed and experiencing delays and shortages in food delivery. Please also know that the Café is working hard to follow the published daily breakfast and lunch menus, but substitutions may continue for a while. Individual snacks and ice cream are not being sold in the Cafe at this time. Parents/guardians can still order ice cream for Classroom Celebrations. We will let you know when we can resume selling these items.
3) Star Night is tomorrow evening, Saturday, October 16th beginning at 7:15 pm. PTA, Discover Science and Georgia Tech are sponsoring International Observing the Moon Night.
Here is the link to the sign up genius if you haven't already signed up for this event.

Tips for Parents
Use Red Ribbon Week as an opportunity to continue talking to your kids about drug safety. Let them know that alcohol and drug use will not be tolerated. Let them know that they should only take medicine from a trusted adult, such as a school nurse, a doctor, or a parent, and NEVER from a stranger or another child.
Watch Natural High’s (naturalhigh.org) free celebrity drug prevention videos with your child and use their discussion questions to have a conversation with them about drugs and alcohol. Recommended for grades 2nd – 5th
Get to know the parents of your children's friends.
Work together to set boundaries and monitor behavior.
DID YOU KNOW… (thinking ahead)
Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

Story Book Character Day
Dear Families,
Hembree Springs Elementary is very excited to announce that on Friday, October 29, 2021, we will be hosting a Story Book Character Day! On this day the staff and students may dress up as their favorite story book character. We are asking that the character come from a book that your child reads and loves (not just from a movie or cartoon.)
Please work with your child to plan a fun and simple homemade costume. We are asking that you work together to be creative with items around the house versus spending money on a store-bought costume. Your child may bring a copy of the book to class that day so that we can take part in several character study activities!
To help ensure students’ feelings of safety and security, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No props, dangerous-looking items, or costume masks covering the face. Please note: face masks will continue to be required per Fulton County Schools’ Covid mitigation policy. See below for examples of acceptable costume choices.
Thank you for making this day possible for your student(s). Please reach out to Carrie McAtee, Curriculum Support Teacher, if you have questions (mcatee@fultonschools.org).

As of now, your students (grades 3-5) should have received their book for the PTA-sponsored book club. If they have not yet received their book, please email volunteer@hembreespringspta.org and let us know. We do have extra books at this time.
