WHAT'S HAPPENING AT BLE
IDIT-A-READ
Get your books and read your way to Nome! Big Lake Elementary’s Idit-A-Read starts March 1st and goes through March 31st. Read and record the minutes your child reads at home on their calendar, initial and return to school each Thursday in March. The goal is to read 1131 minutes and follow the Iditarod Trail. Classes will also be competing to reach Nome first. The winning class earns a lunchtime pizza party in April. Parents can join the race as well by entering the minutes that they read on the Parent calendar, have your child initial it and return it to school on Thursday as well. Information should be coming home with each student on Thursday and copies of each have been attached to this newsletter. Enjoy some great books and read your way to Nome!

MUSIC NOTES
3rd graders are gearing up to learn how to read and play music on recorders! By Spring Break, your student will have brought home a packet of music to practice and learn from. If your child does not already have a recorder, we have recorders available for purchase here at the school for $10, or you can rent one from the school for $5. You should have seen a letter come home with more information. If you choose not to purchase or rent from the school, please supply your students with a recorder by Tuesday March 19th so they can practice. Thank you for your support in your student's musical endeavors!

5TH GRADE SPONSORSHIP
Calling all caring hearts!
The 5th grade at Big Lake Elementary participates in a wonderful field trip each spring where we go to Homer for 3 days and 2 nights. Students get to learn about ecosystems, tidal animals, digital photography, among many other things. They get to ride in a boat in Kachemak Bay, sleep in yurts, hike, swim, and learn. The cost of the trip is $240, and some of the students are struggling to come up with the funds. We are looking for community members that might be willing to sponsor some or all of a student’s trip. If you are interested, please call Shari at Big Lake Elementary (892-9700) and tell her you have a caring heart! Thanks in advance!
