Grade Level News
Kindergarten
During the month of January the kindergarten students will be learning about many topics in reading. The students will read non fiction texts about Martin Luther King Jr. and Presidents’ Day. The students will also explore the topic of gravity during both reading and science. The focus will be finding evidence in the text that supports the author’s main point. In math the students will begin exploring non standard measurement. The students are encouraged to discuss the measurable attributes of different objects and compare different objects. We are very proud of the progress the students are making on their sight words in SIPPS. Continue to practice reading and writing the sight words at home. Remember that all the students have access to RAZ kids at home. Be sure to have your child log in to read books and take short comprehension quizzes. This month we will begin our DRA testing (Development Reading Assessment).
First Grade
The First Grade Team would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Students are working to memorize their sight words. Learning sight words increases reading fluency and builds confidence with young readers. Students are learning about force, motion, and gravity in science. Practicing addition and subtraction facts will help your child in math as we are learning about comparing numbers and the strategies of addition and subtraction. Learning how to add and subtract multiples of ten from any number less than 120 is a focus of this quarter’s math lessons. For example, 40 more than 27 equals 67. 30 less than 84 equals 54.
Special thanks to the fantastic chaperones that helped with our field trip to the Pioneer Arts Settlement in December. We couldn’t do it without you. What field trip is coming up? The Marine Discovery Center is planned for Feb. 22. More details to come. Watch your child’s newsletter and weekly folder!
