Pronoun Antecedent

Pronoun Ante-whaaaaaa?

What Is It?

What are pronoun antecedents? First, let's start off with the basics; a pronoun is a word used to stand for (or take the place of) a noun. For example:

  1. David turned in his project late.
The proper noun is David, what would be the pronoun that replaces the proper noun?

His would be the pronoun that replaces David's name, so that it won't have to repeat.

An antecedent is a word for which a pronoun stands. In the sentence above, David is the antecedent, because his refers back to David.
