STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Paper Circuit STEM Activity
Students on the Blue Team wrote and solved a real world linear context problem that could be represented by an equation, table, and graph. They then created a paper circuit with copper tape, LED light bulbs, and a lithium battery in order to illuminate the answer to their problem on both the table and graph.
Convection Currents Lesson
This week, Mrs. Flesch's science class completed a lab on convection currents. They were able to create a model of a convection current using tap water and colored ice cubes.
MIT App Inventor
Students were introduced to MIT App Inventor where they are learning to make mobile apps. The Blue Team students enjoyed building the app and then seeing it run on the tablet. With MIT App Inventor, students learn the basics of programming apps for Android devices.
Cuneiform Writing
In our topic of Mesopotamia the students learned about the first form of writing the cuneiform. The cuneiform writing began as pictures, but over the years the pictures were sorted into 500 or so symbols that stood for sounds and ideas as well as things. In the past students had to learn to make all the symbols quickly, neatly, and in a way other scribes could read on clay tablets. To practices as scribes, my class smoothed out a piece of clay to form it into a small clay tablet. Then they were able to copy some of the cuneiform symbols on their tablet.
World of Cells!
Mr. Medica's Science students had a chance to dive into the world of cells! The students were able to get "hands on" as they used microscopes to view cells. They were able to examine specimens of plant and animal cells. In addition, they observed newspaper print and cotton fibers. They were amazed at all the detail they could see at 100 times magnification! They learned that microscopes use magnification to make small objects appear larger, as well as use resolution to make the magnified image sharp and clear. In the end, the students walked away having a deeper understanding of a microscopic world they didn't even know existed! You might say that the microscope lab really magnified their knowledge of cells!
