Midway Mustang Memo
September 2016
Dear Parents,
What is APTT? APTT is an acronym that stands for Academic Parent-Teacher Teams. This process is powerful as it combines parents, teachers, and students together with a common focus. Strong relationships are built as this high-impact system of family engagement aligns grade level learning concepts, student performance data, and family-teacher communication and collaboration. (Maria C. Paredes, APTT, WestEd) Midway is continuing with its second year of APTT—we hosted our first session of K, 1st, and 2nd grades on Tuesday, September 13, with an impressive number of our families attending--about 76%! Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teams will meet on Tuesday, September 20th—don’t miss this important event!
During the month of September, Midway students and staff have been practicing the habit of being proactive—one of the 7 Habits of Leader in Me—and demonstrating leadership skills. At our Principal Pal celebration in October, students from each homeroom will be recognized for their leadership and for being proactive.
We are extremely proud of our newly renovated Media Center! If you have not had a chance to see how beautiful it looks with the new furniture, shelving, carpet, paint, etc., be sure to come by and visit! The Book Fair will be here the week of October 10-14, which is a perfect opportunity to visit the Media Center and shop for books!
We also have a new robotics table and three more raised garden beds thanks to a former Midway student, Nolan Hale. Nolan completed these projects in pursuit of his Eagle Scout status. He has fond memories of school at Midway and wants to make a contribution to his elementary school. Thank you, Nolan!
There are many opportunities to become involved at school. Our Mustang Moms, Watchdog DADS, PTA members, and Mentors are extremely active in our school. One of our Partners in Education, Keep Forsyth Beautiful, is hosting a work day in the outdoor garden at Midway on Thursday, October 13, from 4:00-6:00. Come and help us beautify our outdoor learning area! We greatly appreciate the dedication and support of all of these groups! For more information on how you can connect with any of these groups, please contact the school office.
Fall break is quickly approaching—there will be no school the week of September 26-30. Have a safe and restful week as you treasure this time with your family!
With kind regards,
Jan Munroe, Principal
Daphne Rogers, Assistant Principal
Abby Buchanan, Administrative Support

News from the Clinic
Currently, I am checking hearing and vision for grades 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Parents will only receive paperwork (in approximately 2 weeks) if your child needs to seek further evaluation from a doctor.
Also, there are still some chronic illness action plans (asthma, allergies, seizures, etc) I still need to collect. Please send those forms in as soon as possible. If you need another form, please contact me by email or phone message.
Thank you,

Counselor’s Corner
September is going strong. The Leader in Me is a fantastic new program that we started this year at Midway. Being proactive is our first habit we have been focusing on. Encourage your child to be proactive at home through taking responsibility to clean up without being asked, helping a sibling or you with a job around the house, and helping to plan a family outing or meal.
Did you know I do a variety of activities with our students? One of the biggest parts of my job is to go into classrooms every 2-3 weeks and teach lessons based on three Mindsets as recognized by the American School Counselor Association (personal/social, academic, and career). These ASCA Mindsets align perfectly with our Forsyth County Learner Profile. Currently, my classroom lessons have focused on listening skills and following directions in Kindergarten through 3rd grades, learning styles in 4th, and organization in 5th. Be sure to check out my itsLearning course to see more about my classroom lessons for each grade level.
