Welcome to the October 29th, 2021, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Hello, Southeastern families:

SES Holiday Assistance
The holiday season is upon us once again! Is your family in need of holiday assistance for this year? Would you like to provide donations to support families in our community? Please complete the form at this link. If you experience difficulties with the link, please email SES Counselor Jen Smith at jensmith@hse.k12.in.us.
Body Safety Presentations
Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Assistance and Suicide (formerly Chaucie’s Place) will be visiting SES again. Presentations will be Tuesday, November 2, and Wednesday, November 3. Their body safety curriculum, Child Lures Prevention, Think First & Stay Safe, will be presented virtually to students. The lesson will provide relevant, balanced and proven prevention strategies to help families and children increase awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop and prevent these crimes. As a community, we must think of childhood sexual abuse as a preventable disease. Collaboration between educators, parents and guardians, the medical community, law enforcement and our communities-at-large can proactively protect our children before abuse ever happens.
Topics to be covered:
For K-6 (elementary) we will discuss:
- Using our brains to keep us safe
- Bullying
- Body safety and the idea “my body belongs to me.”
- Brainstorm trusted adults
- The difference between secrets and surprises
- Trusting our “guts” or innate feelings
- The idea that everyone is special
Trained professionals will provide a 45 minute virtual lesson in each classroom at SES. Classroom teachers will also be present in each classroom during the lesson. Mrs. Smith, SES School Counselor, will be available if students have further questions or concerns. A parent resource video can be viewed by visiting their website at www.indianaprevention.org and selecting the “Our programs” tab at the top right hand of the page.
If you do NOT want your student to participate in this program, please complete the opt out form attached below. The form will be available until the end of the day Monday, Nov. 1. You also have the option to stop by the school office to fill out an opt-out form.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact Jennifer Smith, SES School Counselor @ jensmith@hse.k12.in.us or 317-594-4340.

Second Steps
We just had week 6 of our SEL scope and sequence. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following:

- Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion-management strategies-including stress management for older students, to calm feelings down.
- Empathy and Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
- Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
S: Say the problem
T: Think of Solutions

Arriving to School Late
If you are dropping your student(s) off at school after morning car rider, and there are no adult staff members present outside, you MUST park your car, walk your student into the building, and sign him/her in at the table inside door #1. It is a safety concern to let students out curbside without adult supervision, and we want to be certain that all students are safe while entering/exiting the building. Also, students dropped off late will be marked “tardy" in Skyward. A student is considered tardy when arriving after 7:40.
