Learning with Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles

Growing with Manipulatives

When given a choice, children like to model a situation to demonstrate understanding.

Manipulatives provide that concrete freedom to solve problems. Many

students have difficulty understanding mathematics because they are unable to make the

connection between the physical world and the abstract world. In order to make understanding permanent, children must understand the underlying concepts. Manipulatives help create clear mental images which help the transition to abstract ideas in the future. Connections are also made when Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles use manipulatives, which help them bridge the gap between mathematical ideas and real world situations. Which is exactly where I want them to be able to use their mathematical knowledge!

February Focus on Mokie:

This week, Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles learned how to groom, tack up a pony, care for tack like saddles and bridles, and the importance of doing these things correctly. The safety of the rider and horse depend on it! Here they are hard at work!

Jan Brett Author Study

Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles did an author study of Jan Brett this week and had a blast reading about snow bears, mittens, hats, and gingerbread characters. We acted out Gingerbread Baby as it was read aloud. We even made our gingerbread puppets run, jump, and laugh just like in the book!
