Literacy Academies
We will continue working in small groups with most of the grades to help support your implementation of Literacy Academies. Second grade teachers, we will also be pulling kids in the afternoon for testing from 1:15-2:15 p.m. You can contact us in room 6 should you have any questions.
Message from Mr. Melendez Title 3 Instructional Coach
When planning for your classroom discussions, ensure that your students know the conversation norms and the structure you want them to use. If you are teaching a new structure (i.e. four corners, concentric circles, Think Pair Share, etc.…) teach the structure using content students are already familiar with so that the student can focus on the structure and norms and not necessarily the content. We want our English Learners familiar with the structures of classroom discussions so that they may focus on the content and academic language and not the process in future discussions. On Tuesday, you will have an opportunity to plan discussion(s) with your grade level. I created a folder entitled “Classroom Discussions” in Malabar’s Google Drive with resources for you to use.
Do not hesitate to contact me if you would like me to demo a classroom discussion, co-plan a discussion, or co-teach a discussion with you.
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.
Updates from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
- The annual ELPAC letters were sent home today to our current English Learners. Please return them to office and or my box.
- We will be holding elections for our SSC and ELAC councils this Monday. Please help encourage our parents to be a part of our school councils.

- Finally, upcoming in October is our ELD observations as part of OLAS compliance.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions and or concerns. Thanks everybody and have a great weekend!
Self-Care Corner-Ms. Rodriguez-PSW
Self Care Tip: 1st day of Fall is upon us! Welcome to the pumpkin scented cozy season of the year. This week make it a goal to indulge in a fall inspired treat of your liking (ie. Pumpkin spice latte, apple cinnamon muffin) or share your best dessert recipe with a colleague. Primary Promise Math Teacher-Katie Vargas de Chenu
Greetings Malabar Bears! My name is Katie Chenu (sounds like Shenu) and I will be your new Primary Promise Math Instructor this year. I am coming from Local District Central where I was the TSP advisor for Richard Riordan Primary Center. Before that, I was a 4th grade teacher for many years at Eagle Rock Gifted Magnet. Here are a couple of fun facts about me: 1. I grew up on an island 2. I played boy's varsity soccer in HS (pre Title IX). The most important thing to me is my family. I have three children; Silvia Inez, Eduardo and Thiago, my husband Eduardo and my fur baby Khaleesi (I'm a huge GOT fan). My favorite thing to do is to be with my dog and my kiddos at a soccer tournament. We are a big soccer family ...go Galaxy (sorry LAFC!).
I am so excited to to work with you all this year because...I heart math!!! Please be on the look out for a teacher math survey which I will be sending you all via Ms. Gutiérrez. Please fill out as soon as possible. Mrs. Chenu

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
I we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
Our goal is to ensure that you are planning for opportunities for student discussion in the classroom in a variety of content areas. This week the focus will be on ELD/ALD instruction.
