Northern Lights
An Explanation and an Experiment
Explanation
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, are a natural phenomenon that occur in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The Northern Lights are a result of collisions of charged particles from the sun colliding with each other in the Earth's atmosphere. These collisions happen near the Earth's magnetic poles. The light display that happens then is a beautiful mix of colors.
Experiment
To create a magical experience like those of viewing the Northern Lights, you will only need a few common household items: saucer, food coloring, milk, and liquid dish soap.
Pour some milk into the saucer.
Add a few drops of food coloring using more than one color.
Do not stir.
Add a drop or two of dish soap.
Watch in Awe.
