Course Registration 2022-23 Edition
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Eagle Nation,
This week is course registration week! Across the district students at all grade levels will participate in online course registration for the 2022-23 school year. GWHS guidance counselors and teachers will advise students on the courses available for their selection for the 2022-23 school year during two Teachers As Advisors sessions to be held on Wednesday, February 9 and Thursday, February 10. Students will be informed of the course selections during Wednesday's advisement session and will be provided copies of the district course registration forms to take home to discuss their selections with their parents. On Thursday, students will register for their selected courses inside of the PowerSchool platform. Please take this time to discuss with your students their post-secondary career dreams. We would like to ensure that ALL students who graduate from GWHS are college and career ready for whatever they may dream! This is especially important when it comes to selecting their CTE pathway. All students must select a CTE pathway for the 2022-23 school year. For the 2022-23 school year we will offer pathways in automotive, precision machinery, robotics, nurse aide, dental careers, criminal justice, emergency medical technician, welding, electrical, plumbing, culinary arts, NJROTC, game design, video and media technology, and cyber security. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your student's guidance counselor or grade level administrator.
I hope that your son/daughter has continued to find accessing the work in Canvas to be straight-forward and helpful. As said previously, although nothing can replace the impact of students being in school to receive the direct instruction and immediate feedback from their teachers, the use of Canvas has enabled us to provide the students with the next best thing. With the strong possibility that home learning due to inclement weather may occur again at some point during this term, please remember to refer to Mrs. Castle's and the DPS Technology department's guidance, including some very clear and helpful video tutorials, to support students and parents in navigating Canvas. This information is available via the students’ Canvas accounts but can also be viewed from the school website.
Also, now that we are well into the second semester, the teachers, other administrators, and I have one vision for our students and we hope it closely matches yours. We want ALL of them to become all that they can be. We want them to be successful through good, consistent attendance, perseverance, utilizing help from our faculty, and working diligently. We want this because these traits will build good habits that will carry them profitably throughout their life. We expect a great deal from them because they are so very capable of producing great results! Parents, please be aware that attendance at the high school is very important. Students must be present 90% of the time. If your child has missed 10 or more days during the first semester you should receive a letter in the mail by the end of the week. If you have questions in regards to your child’s attendance, please contact their counselor to schedule a parent meeting.
Finally, we urge you to stay involved at George Washington High School. Decades of research show that when parents are involved students have:
-Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates
-Better school attendance
-Increased motivation, better self-esteem
-Lower rates of suspension
-Decreased use of drugs and alcohol
-Fewer instances of violent behavior
On behalf of George Washington High School, welcome back! We have missed you all so much over the past few days!
Dr. Johnnie M. Simmons
Proud Principal

Lots of Learning happening at GW!!
In dental labs, students showed how to read dental X-Rays and it identify low and bottom teeth from those X-Rays!
In the Auto body class, Students discussed and showed how to identify if Nitrogen exists in tires! Green cap = Nitrogen
In Computer Information class, the server room is very cold because the server runs hot and if it's too hot, the computers are shut down!! The server is small because it serves about 80 computers in our CTE building. Now we know why computer server rooms are so big at large corporations!
And our FUTURE teachers...WOW...the questions Mrs. Stone asked is What instructional technique/activity have you experienced in a classroom that you feel worked well!! Amazing answers!!!
Thank you Eagles for teaching and showing what you guys are learning!! The 4 things mentioned above are ONLY the highlights of these classes!!!
