Nearing the end of quarter one
It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the first marking period! Our first several weeks of school have been wonderful! It has been a pleasure getting to know the students by visiting classrooms, talking with them during passing time and seeing them at lunch. The students at Tomek have been caring, respectful and principled. We are delighted with the energy, positive attitude and enthusiasm that our students have brought to our school.

Ways to Make Your Child's School Year Successful
You are your child's first teacher and can help make their school year a successful one by setting the stage for learning. Below are some tips to help create this success.
Routines
Develop simple routines for smooth, stress-free mornings and afternoons. Children love to have routines. It makes them feel safe, secure and confident.
Talk to your child about organization. Empower them to get ready for school the night before where they set out their clothes and pack their backpack.
Discuss with them what their morning routine will be. After school, set another routine. Ask your child what they did during their day; ask what their 'high' and 'low' was (favorite and least favorite part of their day). This will help open up healthy lines of communication.
Create another spot in the house for your child to complete any work they have.
Responsibility
Teach your child responsibility by helping them get organized. Make sure your child always has their backpack and any materials for coming to school and learning. Have your child review and show you their daily planner and/or take home folder.
Readiness
Ensure that your child goes to school each and every day ready to learn. Speak positively to your child about school and the teachers. Your attitude toward learning will send a powerful message to your child. Be their cheerleader by encouraging and praising their efforts. See to it that your child gets between 9-10 hours of sleep every night so they feel rested and alert.

Three steps to homework success
- Discuss. Begin each afternoon or evening by asking what homework they have. You can set a positive tone with comments like "I loved writing in my journal when I was your age" or "It's exciting that you're old enough for long division."
- Plan. Ask your youngster what order they will do the work in. You might suggest that they finish the hardest first or the longest assignment as soon as she gets home and save the easier ones after dinner. Or perhaps they prefer to get simpler assignments out of the way so they will have fewer tasks ahead of them. Try each way to see what is best.
- Review. Look over their finished work together. You might compliment your child on something they did particularly well. Avoid telling them answers. The teacher needs to know what they are able to do all by themself.
Halloween Festivities
- Since the main objective of the day is academic, all students, Kindergarten through 5th grade, must bring their costumes to school to change into before the party, rather than wearing them to school. Parents, please keep costumes as simple as possible so that students will be able to manage them independently.
- Costumes should not be worn to school. Students may change into them before their party and our parade.
- Scary masks and props will not be allowed. These items can often pose a safety hazard and will be held in the office for parents to pick up, if brought to school.
- Face/body make-up and hair coloring will not be allowed due to the high potential for distraction during the rest of the school day. These items are not to be brought to school at any time.
- Our Dress Code prohibits the wearing of any clothing (including costumes) that glorifies in any way, the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or violence (no morbid themes, no weapons, no bloody wounds, etc.). Please supervise this to help us provide a healthy, age-appropriate atmosphere.
- Dress that is degrading in any way to any culture, religion, or race will not be allowed. Students that do not adhere to the above rules concerning costumes will be asked to change back into their regular school clothing.
- While we are allowing students to wear their costumes during the Halloween parties, we are also committed to maintaining an enjoyable yet educational atmosphere in our classrooms. For this reason, we would also like to limit the number of parents and siblings attending the classroom parties. Please see your child's teacher for classroom details.
- Sometimes, the excitement of the holiday is compounded by the presence of many extra people in the rooms. Please check with your child’s teacher for further details.
- Parents who wish to have their children excluded from these activities, may write a note and we will provide alternate activities for them in another room in the building.
We truly appreciate your cooperation in helping us to provide a safe, manageable, fun and appropriate experience for our students.
Tiger Roar of the Month - Principled
Dear Tomek-Eastern Families,
As we continue our journey in preparing students for the 21st century, we are helping our students to learn and live the attributes that will enable them to be self-directed people. This month focuses on the attribute of being PRINCIPLED. We will continue to help students understand the importance of acting with honesty and integrity in the daily choices they make. Students will be encouraged to show fairness and justice for all, and to take responsibility for their actions.
Our continuous goal is to help students realize the connections that can be made beyond school, and that occur at home and in their communities.
Throughout the month, please ask your child to share the lessons, class discussions, and literature that they have experienced that focused on being a principled person.
If you observe your child being “principled” (being honest, fair and assuming responsibility for their actions), please mention this to your child. Help them to realize the connections that they are making.
Remember, “Having integrity, and being a principled person means doing the right thing, even if no one is watching.”
Mr. Young
