Social Media - Powerful Tool for Good...and Not So Good
Social media can be an incredibly useful tool for sharing information and building community. Our schools and school district use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, among others to reach out to families and help them keep up with what's going on.
This month the folks in Human Resources launched social media tools for sharing job openings in our district (see below). Please take a look, the platforms make it easy to share employment possibilities with others.
We also know social media can be used in a negative way, as when students or others use it to threaten, harass or bully. The website www.stopbullying.gov has information about digital awareness for parents, tips for teachers and other useful tools.
Social media has become part of the fabric of our society, it's good for us to be aware of what we can do to support a healthy climate in the digital community.

Please Note! Infinite Campus Parent Portal Notifications
On December 2, 2019, (and at the beginning of each school year) all families in Infinite Campus Parent Portal will automatically be set up to receive the following types of messages:
- Emergency
- Priority Notification
- General Notification
- Teacher
- Attendance
- Behavior
Families may log into Parent Portal and opt out of all settings EXCEPT Emergency and Priority, which will remain selected for all families. This will ensure that, when there's a school emergency, all families in Infinite Campus for that school receive notification. This could include lockdowns, evacuations, weather closings and all situations requiring immediate response.
Thanks for all you do to help keep our schools safe.

Spotlight: ALC & Rivers2Lake
Students from Duluth’s Area Learning Center ventured out in canoes to help conduct water quality monitoring on the Pokegama River. Accompanied by Rivers2Lake staff and their ALC teachers, students conducted water chemistry analysis and classified aquatic macro invertebrates to assess indicators of the river’s water quality. They also learned canoeing skills and teamwork as they maneuvered through the winding river bends.
Many thanks to The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation and Esperanza Fund, Rivers2Lake Program, the Office of Education Equity, Duluth Public Schools and Duluth Area Learning Center staff for supporting these impactful, high-quality educational experiences.
