"Love First, Last, & Always"
Indigenous history and culture is rich with wisdom and real-world connections. As a school, we are committed to honouring and deepening our appreciation for our Indigenous ancestors. Each month, we focus on one of the 7 Sacred Indigenous teachings, which connects beautifully to our Catholic faith as well as the values of our namesake, Jean Vanier.
For the month of February, we are focusing on LOVE and we are encouraged to be like the eagle. The eagle demonstrates love and loyalty by staying with its mate for life. Together they build their nest, take turns sitting on the eggs and work to raise their young. Like the eagle, we should show love and create peace by accepting others and by cooperating when working together to achieve goals.
For the past two weeks, we’ve been blessed to have the Indigenous Map at our school. This large map features treaty boundaries, reserves, Indigenous symbols, and key dates throughout history across our beautiful country. Classes have been engaged in a variety of lessons to deepen their appreciation and understanding of our Indigenous ancestors.
We have so many lessons and so much history to learn from our Indigenous brothers and sisters. Stay tuned as we continue to explore our Indigenous history!

Strategy Explained:
This strategy is essentially ‘take-away’ but using more efficient counting strategies to do so.
49 - 23=
49 - (10 +10 +3) = 26
OR 49 - 23 =
49 - 20 = 29 29 - 3 = 26
