The Invention
Jan Ernst Matzeliger moved to Lynn, Massachusetts in 1876. He worked all day and learned english at night. Eventually he learned enough english to study physics and mechanical science. After ha had learned all that ha sd needed to know he started working on an invention that would change the shoe industry forever.
At first he made his machine out of anythin that he could get a hold of: cigar boxes, metal scraps, ald nails, etc. When others found out what he was doing people told him that he was crazy and that it would never work. although Jan, desperate to get his machine to work kept trying. Soon it worked.
Other shoemakers came to him in order to purchase a machine. Even though people offered him lots of money for the machine he never asked for that much.
