Idaho Virtual Academy AVID Program
This form will outline the AVID 20/21 Program application
Application deadline extended to April 15
What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an in-school academic support program focused on college and career readiness for qualifying students in grades 8 and 9. AVID, a selective program with limited number of cohort participants, is designed to add an additional level of support to prepare students for college eligibility and success.
AVID Student Requirements
The AVID program requires a full commitment with added course work and obligations for students who apply and meet the program criteria. It is important to understand that AVID is not a remedial program, for students who consistently earn “D” or “F” grades, or for students who are unmotivated to actively participate in school. AVID requires:
- Required additional AVID elective class;
- Maintaining full academic engagement, including appropriate class connect attendance as outlined in the school handbook;
- Maintaining the AVID [virtual] binder with assignment/grade record sheets and daily notes in all classes.
- Participating in supplemental extracurricular AVID requirements.
AVID Participation
Students who actively engage in AVID will learn:
- Study Skills
- Leadership Skills
- Collaborative Learning
Students who actively engage in AVID show:
- Higher persistence in college performance
- Improved study skills and habits
- Increased engagement in school and overall academics
AVID is currently only available for those who will be in 8th or 9th grade during the 20/21 school year
AVID Selection Criteria
AVID students are students who may need additional support and guidance to realize their full potential.
Identification and consideration for the AVID program may include, but is not limited to:
- State test scores;
- Grades;
- Current course progress;
- Class Connect attendance and active engagement;
- Need for support to create and explore higher education opportunities (e.g. first generation, economic);
- Personal desire to enter the program;
- Individual experiences and/or special circumstances.
Steps to apply
Step 1: Prepare for your written application & video recorded interview
You will be required to answer a few questions, using your computer camera and mic on the FlipGrid platform, in addition to writing some responses.
Prior to submitting your application, thoughtfully reflect on the questions listed below. Best practice is to think about and write down your answers prior to recording yourself in FlipGrid. Prior to submitting your written application, complete a rough draft, edit it, and review it before submitting your final draft.
Your video recorded interview questions are:
- What is AVID? - take a look at the description above, think about it, and then respond to this question in your own words. How would you describe AVID and what it is to a friend, parent, or teacher?
- What makes you want to be a part of AVID?
- What do you feel AVID might do for you or help you to do?
- What are your strengths as a student?
- When you think about your life after middle school and high school, what are your dreams, goals, or plans? (It’s okay if you’re not sure yet—just give this your best idea)
Your written application questions are:
- Thinking about yourself as a student, what are things that challenge you and that you might be able to get better at so that you are even more the student and person you’d like to become?
- When you think about things you might do after high school, who are the people in your life right now who will be able to help you along the way? If you’re not sure, that’s okay. Give us your best idea about this question.
- Give an example from your life of something you have had to work hard for or that challenged you. What did you learn from that experience?
- In AVID you will be expected to study more and to take harder classes. How does that expectation make you feel?
