Lockport City School District
2021-2022 School Opening Plan
August 19, 2021
On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, the Lockport City School District Board of Education was presented with an update on CDC guidance and discussed a school opening plan for the 2021-2022 school year during its regular meeting.
As most of you know by now, school districts in New York State were notified that guidance for opening schools would not be issued from the New York State Department of Health. Late last week, the New York State Education Department issued a guide, based on CDC recommendations, which have been incorporated into the presentation and discussion. And more recently, it has been reported that soon to be Governor Hochul may mandate masks in schools.
Fortunately and since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, ON BOCES district superintendent Clark Godshall, all of the ON BOCES school superintendents, and public health director Daniel Stapleton have been working closely, meeting regularly, and referring to a variety of data and sources. This model has proven to be helpful throughout the pandemic and especially now, since this school year school opening decisions have been turned back to local counties and districts.
The Lockport City School District is planning for a full in-person schedule for school to open in September, and will be providing academic programs, social emotional support, and an array of extracurricular and athletic offerings for students. The American Rescue Plan funding was used to hire additional teachers and support staff this school year to better meet the needs of students in school as a result of the pandemic.
While vaccines and mask wearing are polarizing topics, there will likely not be an argument that children should be back in school. The Lockport City School District has outstanding teachers, support staff, and administrators to provide the high quality instruction and social emotional support that students need and deserve. It is realized that we need to be mindful of the health and safety of all people as we conduct school this year. Our nurses and custodial staff will remain focused and committed to keeping people safe and healthy.
The school opening plan for 2021-2022 is based on the experiences throughout the pandemic and more recently the four day in-person instructional model last May and June of 2021. The hope is that there will be fewer disruptions to teaching and learning this year with layered mitigation strategies continuing to be implemented. Nonetheless, these remain very challenging times.
The District is committed to reviewing pandemic circumstances in mid to late September once all students and staff have returned, and making adjustments to the plan based on current data and recommendations for schools at that time.

Thank you for your continued patience and support throughout the pandemic. We look forward to opening schools on Tuesday, September 7 for students and staff. Stay safe and be well.
