Homer High-Lights
Volume 2, Issue 5, December 2013
Message from the Principal
We are always looking for ways to improve at Homer High School. In fact, we want to be the best high school in Alaska. One of the ways we are going to achieve this goal is through our School Improvement Process. Every year we look at data and come up with 3 to 4 school goals. Then administration, staff, departments and individuals set action items that are followed throughout the year.
I have included our goals and some of our action items below. They include:
Goals:
- Homer High school will increase student engagement school-wide by increasing our attendance rate to 96%, decreasing discipline incidents by 5%, decreasing our tardies and truancies by 3% and keeping our graduation rate above 95%.
- Increase parent and community involvement by increasing our winter Parent Teacher Conference attendance by 15% and by increasing our parent contacts by 50%.
- Increase our Writing and Math SBA scores by 5%.
Action Items (Sample):
- Create and update a Facebook page. (Completed)
- Publish a monthly newsletter. (In progress)
- Administer and analyze data from common assessments in both Math and Writing. (In progress)
- Create and implement a positive reward system for good attendance (Completed)
- Advertise these goals to students, parents and the community. (Starting the process here!)
This is just a sample of what we are trying to accomplish as a school. We actually have 22 action items we are working on right now, not including what departments and individual teachers are doing.
We are always looking to improve and I would love to get your feedback on our goals or other suggestions on ways we can improve. Please e-mail me at dwaclawski@kpbsd.k12.ak.
Sincerely,
Douglas Waclawski
Principal
