PIRATE PRAISE AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
In the spirit of Pirate Praise and celebrating engagement strategies, let's reflect on the week. Consider the engagement strategies you planned for your instruction and those you observed from your colleagues. (1) Think about why you planned the strategies where you did in your lesson, and (2) how you'd describe the level of engagement each strategy offered? These questions are important to consider as the planning question relates to where students are in their learning and the level at which they're ready to deepen their learning. The question regarding effectiveness relates to considering where you are with understanding engagement strategies, which helps determine where to go next.
Student engagement can be described using quadrants, (1) low engagement/low cognition (i.e. cold calling one student at a time, memorization), (2) low engagement/high cognition, (3) high engagement/low cognition, and (4) high engagement/high cognition (all students are writing or partaking in a group share re: prompts comparing effects of something, etc). As with most instructional practices, there's a continuum spanning from least to most effective to describe the level at which students are engaged. It's important to always move toward the implementation of engagement strategies that target high engagement at high levels of cognition. This is the biggest bang for your buck. It's where the deepest learning occurs. It's where students are applying and inspired by what they're learning.
Okay, back to the 2 reflective questions. Think about the planning process for your engagement strategies and the level of engagement your strategies required from students:
- What would you celebrate?!
- How would you shift what you did for growth?!
- Now go share what you know with a fellow Pirate! Share your treasures!
Engage on Pirates! Arrrrgh!
