Wishtree by Katherine Applegate
Starting on March 9th, our school will begin reading the book Wishtree. Our literacy committee has developed a plan for the entire school to participate in reading this wonderful book to our kiddos. We hope that this can celebrate reading and promote discussion among our entire body of students. Along with the reading, students will do a number of activities to help process the ideas in the story. We will update our own wish tree outside the library to reflect the plot of the story as we read together. Our reading will conclude during the week of April 14th - 17th.
You can support your student's growth as a reader by asking them what's happening in Wishtree!

Library Updates
Over the past two months, our kindergarten classes have been practicing computational thinking as they become programmers. They have practiced creating codes to solve mazes, to run beebots, and to squash green pigs on code.org!
First grade students have begun learning to be programmers also, and will begin working with code.org this week.
Second graders have been developing their skills in collaboration and critical thinking as they work with partners to learn about prehistoric creatures. Student groups have researched in nonfiction books and online encyclopedia to understand their creatures, and they have practiced working with another to complete their reports.
Third graders have been learning about reference books including the dictionary, thesaurus, and online encyclopedia. They have also reviewed how to use the features of a nonfiction book to quickly find answers to their questions. This week, they are showing what they know in their search to find 6 facts about an animal or a foreign country.
Our fourth grade students have been researching as well, looking in nonfiction books and Culture Grams or Britannica to learn about a foreign country. They have focused on citing their sources and using the organization of a nonfiction text to find the answers they're looking for.
Finally, our fifth grade students are wrapping up a project they did around a picture book. They had to read a story with their group, pick one of the animals from the story, research online and in nonfiction books, and create a Google slideshow to share information about the storybook and the animals in it. They will be moving on to a unit on programming and digital citizenship.
Thank you for all you do to support learning in our library!

Youth Commission changes name to Boys & Girls Club
Youth Commission changes name to Boys & Girls Club
The non-profit partnership of Boys & Girls Club and Youth Commission, often referred to as FYC, is officially changing the names of all program arms to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Red River Valley.
Please be assured virtually every aspect of programming will remain the same except the name.
Our staff will begin using the Boys & Girls Club name and “BGC” with youth and throughout the community. As with any change, this will take some getting used to so we appreciate your efforts and patience during the transition.
The Boys & Girls Club at Lincoln Elementary provides a safe, caring, and fun environment where youth can participate in activities that focus on academic success, good character, and healthy lifestyles. Programs offered before school, after school, and most school-out days. BGC also offers full day programs at various locations during the summer.

Eagles Elementary School counselor Cassie Larson, and Students and Wellness Family Facilitator Carly Gaddie recorded a special episode during the State of the Schools Address on the theater stage at South High School.
Please help us keep students safe!
If you pick up your child from school at the end of the day, we need all vehicles to park parallel to the school so children can safely walk from the sidewalk to the waiting vehicles. Please drive NORTH on 9th street when picking up students.
It is essential that we keep a single file line of cars moving NORTH. When vehicles are double –parked or are moving south, it means students must run in between vehicles. This is extremely dangerous. Even though there is a lot of traffic, the cars clear out quickly. Please wait patiently for a spot to pull up and pick up your child safely.
Remember this is a pick-up and drop off area. During the start and end of the school day- if you need to run into the build please park your car in the south parking lot not in front of the school. THANKS!
Traffic Safety:
- Single file traffic moving north.
- Do not leave vehicle unattended.
- Be patient– traffic clears out quickly.
- Never double park or have children run between cars.
- If you need to park your car during drop off times please use the South parking lot.
Tardies/Absences/Appointments
Tardies: Our first bell rings at 8:10. This is the time when students are allowed to go to their lockers and inside their classrooms. Students must be in their classrooms by 8:20. The time from 8:10 to 8:20 is important for organizing and preparing for the day. It is important for all of our students to be on time…meaning in the classroom and ready to learn at 8:20.
Absences: If your child will not be in school, please call our office staff at 446-4900. If we do not hear from you, our office will be calling to check the whereabouts of your child…your child’s safety is always our number one concern. Being on time and having good attendance is crucial for learning. When a child is habitually absent/tardy, there is a negative impact on learning. If you are ever having trouble with getting your child to school on time or your child feeling sick too often, please call the office. Our school counselor, Amy Blesie, would be happy to work with you and offer support and suggestions.
Appointments: If you need to pick up your child during the day, please come to the office to sign he/she out. The office will call your child out of his/her classroom. Due to district policy, we are unable to call your child out of the classroom before you have arrived at the school.
Lincoln PTA- Next meeting March 16th at 6:45
