7th Graders "Listen through Time"

As a kick-off to our "Listening through Time" project, 7th grade Mahkato students held listening conversations with community members to learn about what it was like to be young person in the 20th Century. They learned about bomb-shelters during the cold war era, presidential elections and the first computers people remembered. Students will compare these stories to historical events studied in US Studies.

In Communications, students have honed their skills of holding a genuine conversation with someone they don't know. In US Studies, they are learning major events, movements and people of the 20th Century. These 7th graders know how to ask great questions and paraphrase as active listeners. Earlier this quarter they interviewed classmates, our community guests, and now will interview older family or neighbors to collect more everyday stories. This project was inspired by the national listening project StoryCorps, whose mission reminds us that "everyone's story matters".

Thank you to our community guests:

Darrin Wacker and Judi Brandon (MAPS school board members)

Kuma Takamura (Greater Mankato Diversity Council Education Director)

Herb Kroon, Lisa Cownie (Rotary Club Members)

Doris Boyce, former MAPS English teacher

Thomas Sager (MAPS Director of Business Services)

Joe Schmit - Author and Sports Anchor Visits DMMS

Joe Schmit visited with DMMS students in April to discuss his book Silent Impact. Through research, Joe has discovered that "we make our biggest impressions when we are not trying to be impressive." That is what Silent Impact is all about. Your success and happiness are not related to your title or how many awards you have won but to the impact you have on others. He also talked about the 3 things that people making a Silent Impact have in common: Purpose, Persistence and Passion. Joe shared stories of people making a difference in other people's live and how are students at DMMS can make an impact too.
