We have wrapped up our analysis of how plot unfolds and how characters change in fiction text. We will begin to identify and interpret theme in fiction and poetry. When we conclude with theme, we will then work on writing concise and accurate summaries of fiction texts.
Once we wrap up our fiction LEQs, we will start our unit on National Government in social studies that we will integrate with our nonfiction reading.
We are just beginning Unit 2 in Everyday Math. This unit will focus on fraction operations and ratios. We will be finding the GCF (greatest common factor), the LCM (least common multiple), multiplying and dividing fractions, and writing ratios. This unit relies heavily on math facts; please review math facts with your child as this will help them in class. We will continue to have Friday quizzes based on the lessons from that week. Our Unit 2 test is tentatively the week of October 24th.

Here is what we will be accomplishing this month in each subject area in Mrs. Seufert’s classroom.
Word Work-We will be reviewing our three sets of prefixes and having a quiz on all three sets on Friday, October 7th. We will then move on to learn suffixes and root words. Again, we will spend a week with each set and then have a quiz on Friday.
Writing- We will be publishing and sharing our first graded narrative. We will then begin to write our second graded narrative pieces. In addition, the students will be finishing their Patriot’s Pen Writing Contest pieces, so we can submit our entries for the contest. This contest is sponsored by the VFW, and there will be four of our students that will be selected to win $100, $75, $50, and $25 gift cards. We started our stories on Constitution Day and will complete them this month. Then, we will have our end of the unit On-Demand Writing Prompt on Thursday, October 20th. On October 21st for Parent/Grandparent Visitation Day, we will be sharing our narratives! After that, we will begin our second unit of writing which will be argumentative writing. This will lead us into our new marking period and the month of November.
Science-The students will have a quiz on the steps of scientific inquiry on Thursday, October 6th. We will review atoms and elements. There will be a quiz on atoms and elements on Wednesday, October 19th. The students’ science interactive notebooks will be collected and graded on Thursday, October 20th. We will then start our unit on energy. It has been a slow start to science, but after BizTown, we will have science every day!
BizTown-Our Unit #3 quiz will be on Monday, October 3rd. Students will find out what job they have on Tuesday, October 4th. We will write friendly letters and articles for BizNet News. We will review our banking and finish up Unit #4. Our Kid Connect Day will be on Tuesday, October 11th . This is when we will plan our day with the students from North Hopewell-Winterstown Elementary School. Our actual day at BizTown is Friday, October 14th. Please remember on the 14th to have all students bring a packed lunch with NO DRINK. They will purchase their drink at the restaurant with their BizTown money. Our Unit #4 quiz will be on October 18th. That will then conclude our BizTown unit.
