DCSD Tech Tidbits 11.07.16
November 7, 2016
Awesome Job!
Mrs. Wright's (BES) 3rd graders have been using BaiBoard and Showbie to cut down on paper and turn in assigned classwork that is done in their choice of style. This has worked so well because my students who are struggling readers and writers are able to turn in work and it makes sense!
Mrs. Brown (DMS) has completed her first flipped lesson with ALL of her classes this past week.
Ms. Adams' (HHS) Biology students created presentations on cells using Keynote. They then presented their findings to the class.
Mr Mixon's (WHE) 5th graders are using Tellagami to record the student's autobiography writings.

Discovery Education's Spotlight on Strategies
Four-To-One
Background
Schema theory explains how our previous experiences, knowledge, emotions, and understandings affect what and how we learn (Harvey & Goudvis, 2000) Good readers and writers allow their schema to help shape their understanding and connections. Keene and Zimmerman (1997) concluded that students comprehend better when they make different kinds of connections: Text-to-self, Text-to-text, and Text-to-world. This strategy will allow students to examine multimodal text to help frame sentences.
Example
- Display these four images to students:
- Ask students to draw 4 boxes on a blank piece of paper and allow one minute per image for students to write about experiences they’ve had with the objects or facts they’ve learned through reading and/or viewing resources.
- Provide time for student to pair or group share their notes and to highlight commonalities.
- In their pairs or small groups, students should work to great a complete sentence that incorporates all four images.
- Be willing to accept any sentence, as silly or untrue as it may be- the importance is the structure of the sentence.
- Select a few sentences to display and guide students through checking for sentence completion by asking students questions such as:
- What type of speech is the word bear in this sentence?
- What is another noun that we can use from the images in place of bear?
- Can we describe the bear?
- What are examples of describing words?
- Pro Tip: If an interactive smart board is available, allow students to come to the board to choose and arrange the images that they would like to use to create their own sentences!
