Summer Kick-Off 2023

Welcome Rita Mikita!

We are THRILLED to welcome Rita to the CMSD Fab Lab Team! Rita has been a science teacher with CMSD for ten years at MC2 STEM and Garrett Morgan. She is a creative, innovative, and adventurous educator who is excited to take on this new challenge of becoming the next Fab Lab Coordinator for CMSD! Rita has spent the past six weeks learning the ins and outs of the Mobile Fab Lab and we can't wait to get her and the trailer back out to schools and making great things with our CMSD kids!

Rock Your World with STEAM

Thousands of members of the CMSD community will be coming together on Saturday, May 13th for the 24th annual Rock Your World with STEAM Family Festival! Students will be sharing STEAM projects in the STEM tent and the ART tent and the CMSD Mobile Fab Lab will be present making great things for students to engage with STEAM and create something fun! Stop by from 9-3!

Guardians STEM Day hosted by NEOSTEM

The CMSD Mobile Fab Lab will be at the Cleveland Guardians STEM Day hosted by NEOSTEM. We are excited to share some baseball themed STEAM activities with students from all over Northeast Ohio! The event will be from 10am-12pm at Progressive Field and all participants will also have a ticket to attend the 1:10pm game verse the Detroit Tigers.

STEM Supply Give Away

CMSD has LOTS of STEM supplies that we want to help get into the hands of teachers who will put them to good use! Paper? Markers? Puzzles? String? Filament? Cardboard? SO MUCH STUFF! Any CMSD employees are welcome! All items are first come- first served!


Come by the CMSD Fab Lab to fill your car with great stuff!

Fab Play Institute

The Fab Play Institute is a week-long opportunity for educators and makers to learn more about STEAM education and explore digital fabrication while getting their hands dirty. CMSD is proud to partner with Hawken School for a fifth year to bring this exciting PD to teachers of North East Ohio. The 2023 Fab Play Institute will take place June 13th-16th at the Hawken School's Upper Campus.

Free PD Opportunity- Material Science Camp for Teachers

ASM Materials Camp®-Teachers is a free, week-long, idea-generating workshop introducing teachers to methods that make math and core science principles more enticing and relevant to their middle and high school students. Materials topics are great motivators in any engineering, technology or science course as students learn concepts that are reflected in their everyday lives.

FREE Summer STEAM Opportunities for Students

FREE Summer STEM Enrichment Camp for Middle Schoolers!

The Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers Program is an engaging, hands on experience developed to enrich learning through Design, 3D Printing, Augmented Reality and Entrepreneurship!


This STEM Camp is FREE for all CMSD middle school students (rising 6-8th graders) and takes place from June 26th to July 14th at Cleveland State University.

Verizon Community Learning Centers Free Activities

The Verizon Community Learning Centers in the Clark-Fulton Library and the Earl B. Turner Community Center offer daily programing for adults and youth around a variety of topics. Learn more about this wonderful resource and check out their calendar of events here:

Planning for 2023-2024

K-8 COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY POSITIONS

CMSD will have approximately five K-8 open Computer Technology positions in schools around the district. This position is an encore class for k-8 students focused on : Digital Citizenship and Literacy, Digital Fabrication, STEM Challenges, and Computational Thinking. Teachers must have a Computer Science license. CSforCLE offers a free program for CMSD teachers who do not currently have a CS license but would like to pursue one during the 2023-2024 school year.

Mobile Fab Lab Visit Request Form

Would you like the Mobile Fab Lab to come to your school during the Fall of 2023 or Spring of 2024? Fill out the form below to show interest. If you're school is chosen, the CMSD Fab Team will be in touch.


There are two types of MFL visits: Exposure and Engage. Exposure visits last about 1 period and are short activities to show students the exiting world of digital fabrication. Each student will create something and make a takeway like a keychain or bookmark. Engage visits last 2-3 periods with the same students and are more involved. For these projects teachers are expected to do some pre- and post-visit work in their classrooms.


NOTE: If you would like to have the MFL come for an ENGAGE lesson with your students you must be able to attend a workshop July 18th OR July 25th

In search of 6 teachers for our Pilot SPHERO ROBOT PROGRAM

The CMSD Fab Lab is excited to add Spheros to our Lending Library! We are looking for two k-2 teachers and four 3-8 teachers of any subject who would like to partake in this pilot program during the 2023-2024 school year.



Requirements:

You must be able to attend a workshop on Thursday June 29th.

You must be a CMSD K-8 teacher.

Must have a high to advanced comfort level with computers and technology

Glowforge Laser- Borrow one for your classroom!

We have also added 3 Glowforge Lasers to our Lending Library! We are looking for 3 K-12 teachers who are interested in learning more about the Glowforge and using them with students for the 2023-2024 school year.


Requirements:

You MUST be able to attend a workshop on June 27th to be a part of this program

You must be a CMSD K-12 teacher

You must have a high to advanced comfort level with computers and technology

You must have room in your school for the laser and filter
