Parenting Corner (keep those cell phones at home!)
We have had a couple of incidents recently in which students had cell phones at school. As a reminder, our school division does not permit elementary school students to have a cell phone (as well as several other types of student-owned electronic devices) at school. For your reference, here is the school board policy (followed by an updated directive- September 2022) for students in grades 6-12.

As you know, Pence Middle School continually experiences disruptions in the daily operation of the school because of student cell phone misuse (both in school and outside of school). If you choose to give your child a cell phone, please be vigilant! As Principal Childs wrote to parents earlier this month, “... educate yourself on the effects of social media on your student(s)... Since COVID, student dependence on social media, the misuse of social media, and the negative influence of social media is a very real issue. I urge you to make the best decision for you and your child in this area. Do some research. Set limits on what he/she is allowed. Have a place for them to set their device at night, away from their bed, etc.”
If you’d like some more information on the impact cell phones are having on our young people, you can always go here: https://www.waituntil8th.org/ Thanks for helping us by making sure your child keeps their cell phone at home.
