Principal's Message

Dear East Orient Parents and Guardians,

It's been great to see our students back in the building and in our classrooms. Our building feels alive again. It's so true, that a school is not a building but in fact the people that live inside it.

The end of the school year is getting closer, and we are starting to turn our minds to all the end-of-year activities. This newsletter is full of vital information, with dates for our 5th-grade promotion parade to how you can support your students with their end-of-the-year assessments.

We are still processing a yearbook this year, so if you would like one, please see the order form further below. The yearbook will not be available for pickup until the beginning of next school year. We are still looking for pictures from parents, so if you have a photo, please email it to clark18@gresham.k12.or.us.

One thing to pay particular attention to is the dropping off of technology. We are not asking for all our equipment back this summer. We do have a criterion for returning your device. We do want all our kindergarten Ipads, 5th-grade Chromebooks, and all other 4th Generation Chromebooks back. The technology department will be contacting those families that have devices out that need to be returned. New devices will be issued in the fall for those that were returned.

I wanted to encourage our families to try and make it to our next virtual PTC meeting coming on the 25th. There is a link to the meeting below in our newsletter.

Thank you all for your continued support as we start to look to the end of the year. It's been quite the year. Let's finish STRONG!!!

Mrs. Hoffert Nominated For the 2020-21 GBSD Excellence In Education Award

Big picture
It was announced during the May 6th Gresham-Barlow School Board meeting, that Mrs. Hoffert had been selected as East Orient's nominee for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Mrs. Hoffert is a passionate educator that gives her all every day, for every student. Her selflessness, hard work, and determination are exemplary for all. It's an honor to have her here at East Orient, serving our community.

Ms. Kai

Ms. Kai is back in the building:))))

We are delighted to have our amazing P.E. Teacher back with us for 3 weeks of in-person P.E. classes. This week will conclude her three weeks, and I have to say, hearing our students running around inside with music has been a welcomed addition to the year.

I want to thank Ms. Kia for being a GREAT P.E. instructor with a heart for what's best for kids. You are a true champion.

Student Daily Survey and Hybrid Absences

Daily Survey

A reminder to our hybrid families, that the Gresham-Barlow School District has asked families to complete the Daily Student Health Survey in ParentVUE before students arrive to school. To reach the survey, simply login to your ParentVUE account. The window should automatically appear with a picture of your student(s) with the survey question below.

If you know that your student will be absent for their in-building portion of the day, please contact the school office with that information prior to the 12:05 pm hybrid in-building start. For your child's safety, our office makes calls home for any students absent that we have not been notified of.

Transportation Changes?

It is important to notify the school as soon as possible when any changes need to be made to your student’s end of day transportation, whether it be a permanent change or just a one day change. With the shortened hybrid in-person schedule, we ask that you contact the school office @ 503-663-4818 by 2pm with any same day changes (unless an emergency situation arises). If you are wanting your student to change to riding the bus home permanently, please also contact First Student before contacting the school, as the hybrid schedule and protocols require more planning. They can be reached at 503-665-8193. (Be sure to know your student’s cohort day).

*Please remember, that students may not go home with “friends” on other busses. Due to Covid-19, students may only ride their scheduled bus to and from school.

Time to Return Those Library Books!

Our library is still missing books that were checked out last year before our Covid-19 shutdown. Mrs. C., our Media Assistant, will be communicating via paper, or email to families that still have books out. Now is the time to start searching high and low for those books. :-) Don't forget to look under beds, on bookshelves and anywhere else you can think of. Books can be brought in during a student's hybrid day or dropped off during school hours outside the office doors in the designated bin.

Technology and Materials Return

The Gresham-Barlow School District will be collecting devices (including chargers & cases) from the following students on June 17th &18th:

  • Kindergarteners
  • 5th Graders
  • Students Leaving the Gresham-Barlow School District
  • Students with the G4 Chromebook

Student devices that do not fit into the above criteria will be able to stay with the student over the summer and can come back to school with the student on the first day of the 2021-22 School year.

Be on the lookout for an email from our district technology department with the specific details and information for those families this applies to.

Hybrid students will be returning textbooks/materials during their final school days. Our e-GBSD only students are asked to drop off when they return tech devices on the 17th and 18th.

More details to follow with times.

End of Year Assessments

All students will be participating in iReady and Dibels end of year assessments sometime between May 24th and June 11th. The student data from these assessments is essential to both measure student learning gains from this year and also to craft plans that will allow us to address unfinished learning when our students return in the Fall.

Transitioning To Middle School/ Forecasting for 2021-22

Our fifth-grade parents are starting to think about what school will look like next year. The jump from elementary school to middle school can be a stressful one. You might find yourself with a million questions. It's always a good idea to reach out to West Orient if you have a question about what to expect.

One way West Orient staff starts to prepare is by getting an idea of who our 5th graders are. Each year our students are asked to complete a forecasting form.

West Orient Middle School 6th Grade Forecasting Form

We have also added below an informational slide deck for you and your 5th grader. I would encourage you to sit with your upcoming 6th grader and go through the presentation and form together. It might be a helpful conversation to have together and a time to talk about their thoughts and feelings about the move to middle school.

PTC News

Hello wonderful East Orient families!

Our PTC has been quiet this past year working behind the scenes. And now it is time to rebuild! Check your emails for a quick glimpse into ways that you can get involved as a parent/family member. We are in the process of rebuilding our entire PTC and would love for you to be a part of it, so grab a friend and come meet with us on May 25th at 6:30 right here on your screen.

We are also going to CELEBRATE how awesome all of our students are with an end-of-the-year treat! We would have loved to do our usual movie night or inflatable obstacle course party, but we will save that for next year. On the last day of in-person school for each cohort group (cohort B - June 11 and cohort A - June 14) we will have Kona Ice here to celebrate them during their afternoon recess time (social distancing rules will still be in place). To celebrate our eGBSD kids, we will have a treat card to give them when you return their school materials. We are so proud and thankful for all of our East Orient students, and their families.

2020-21 School Yearbook

Big picture
We have decided to go ahead and continue with a yearbook for the 2020-21 school year. We want to ensure that we've documented the year, the best that we can. We are asking parents to send in pictures throughout the year of our Eagles, as they participate in online learning. If you have a picture of your little eaglet that you'd like to share, please email it to milliken2@gresham.k12.or.us. We will be reminding everyone as the year goes on. Thanks for helping us ensure we have a yearbook to document this crazy year:)
