In Carlsbad Unified, Every Student Matters
Is each Carlsbad Unified student getting what he or she needs to learn? Are our classrooms welcoming spaces? Does our staff have the skills and support it needs to meet each student “where they are?”
These are the important questions we are grappling with in CUSD because we believe that every student matters, every student has something to contribute, and every student is worth knowing. We therefore are committed to equity, inclusion, and diversity on our campuses.

Spotlight on Schools: Carlsbad Seaside Academy

This amazing photograph of the Milky Way was taken by Adam Gordon, a Carlsbad Seaside Academy (CSA) and Carlsbad High School (CHS) student. His work has been honored with Best of Show and Best of Division at the Del Mar Fair, and named one of the 100 Best Photos of the Year by space.com. By attending CSA, Carlsbad Unified’s Independent Study high school, Adam has been able to pursue his passion, landscape and astrophotography, while meeting the requirements to graduate from high school.
Carlsbad Seaside Academy is a small high school designed for students who can work independently and responsibly, and need a more flexible schedule. Students who are actors, or elite-level athletes, such as equestrians, skateboarders, rodeo riders, or olympians, might confront demands that interfere with the structured world of a comprehensive high school.

SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS: Carlsbad Village Academy

Carlsbad Unified boasts two comprehensive high schools, each with enough academics, sports, and activities to meet the needs of every student—well, almost every student. There are some students who don’t thrive in a large environment, but prefer a smaller, more personal setting. Some students feel overwhelmed by large classes, or the speed of a trimester, or the block schedule. Some have fallen behind in credits, or recently moved into the district, or had an illness or injury that got in the way of their academic progress. For these students, Carlsbad Village Academy (CVA), Carlsbad Unified’s alternative high school, just might be the answer.
