A Note From Mrs. Mathe

Can you believe it is already August?! In some ways it feels like 100 years since we have "been in school", but in other ways it feels like just last week we were walking the halls with kids. In less than a week we begin our 2020-2021 school year. Although it may not be starting the way we thought it may, or the way we usually do, we still get to begin our journey, building classroom communities, school communities, and making new friends... even virtually.

Last night, Dr. Null encouraged all of us to make this first day of school special, even though it is a virtual day. Normally, if you take first day pictures, do that. If you pack a special lunch for your child, do that. Or make a new first day of school tradition with your child(ren). We only get 13 of these first days with our own kids, so there is no reason why THIS first day can't be special too.

School Supply Information

If your family ordered the pre-packaged school supplies at the end of the year last year, we will be hosting a "drive through" event on Tuesday, August 11th from 8:30 am- 12:30 pm to pick up your supplies. We have had the question asked if students will need the supplies during the virtual learning experience. The short answer to that is yes. Remote/Online instruction will mirror in person instructions, so students may still be expected to work in journals, write in notebooks, etc.

We ask that families that plan to come to school face to face beginning September 8th leave the contents of your box in tact and only remove the supplies the students are using for remote instruction for the first few weeks. We ask that all other supplies be returned to school on September 8th to be used for the remainder of the school year.

All traffic will enter the front drive of the school (yellow arrows).

Station 1: Student Login Information

ALL Students will need to pick up a folder that includes their personalized login information for remote learning.

Station 2: Technology

Students who have previously requested to check-out technology will pick up here.

Follow the blue arrows out of the parking lot to Cochran’s Crossing if you did not pre-purchase school supplies. If you pre-purchased school supplies, follow the green arrows around to the back of the school.

Station 3: Pre-purchased School Supplies

This is ONLY for students who have pre-purchased school supply packs through EPI. There will be no extra packs for sale.

Spirit Wear

Our school spirit wear store is now open! School shirts are available in 2 designs, one for our patriotic Thursday's and the other is for our school spirit day, Fridays. The shirts are offered in a variety of styles and sizes. Be sure to read the descriptions to have a clear understanding of what is being offered. Shirts are offered in long sleeve L/S, short sleeved S/S, sweatshirt, and Sport-Tek (which is like a dri-fit shirt). The spirit store closes 8/28/20. Orders must be submitted by then. If you are a virtual Powell family and would like to order, you may still order at the link below and have it delivered to your child's homeroom teacher. We will contact you regarding a date/time for pick up.

A Note from Nurse Wiles

This year, the Powell clinic will look a bit different than in years past. Because of current circumstances, we can no longer accept any medications that may mask the symptoms of Covid-19 without a current doctors order. This includes any over the counter cough and cold medications (including cough drops), Tylenol (acetaminophen), or Advil (ibuprofen), that are used to treat headaches, body aches, sore throats, or fevers. Both Tylenol and Advil can still be administered without a doctors order to treat other conditions such as painful braces, pain from a broken arm, etc. We also can not administer any nebulizer medications at this time, so please send an inhaler to substitute while at school.

For students who will have allergy or asthma medications at school, please obtain an allergy and asthma action plan from your child's doctor prior to dropping off the medication.

As a reminder, all prescription and over the counter medication must be in the original container and not be expired. Medications must be signed into the clinic by a parent or guardian. Medications should never be sent in a child's back pack to the school.

If you have medication that needs to be dropped off at school, we will begin accepting student medication during the ramp up period of August 12- September 4th, during normal school hours. When you arrive at school, please call the front office 936-709-1700 and let the receptionist know that you are here to drop off medication. One of our clinic staff will come to the car to meet you and complete the paperwork. If you are unable to deliver your child's medication during the ramp up period, the clinic will continue to receive medication throughout the year using this same process.

For the most up-to-date information regarding CISD health guidelines and FAQ, please visit the Roadmap to Reopening webpage: Health Guidance and Considerations section.

We look forward to a great year and can't wait to see everyone again.

If you have kindergarten age children or a new student who will be attending Powell next year, please register them. Kindergarten is always the most difficult grade to predict enrollment, and accurate numbers are helpful in the planning process for the coming school year.
