# Mrs. Schwahl's Algebra 2 Class

## 1st 9 Weeks (Aug. 20, 2012 - Oct. 25, 2012)

Standard: Polynomials-Perform operations on polynomials. Find factors of polynomials, learning special techniques for factoring quadratics. Understand the relationships among the solutions of polynomial equations, the zeros of a polynomial function, the x-intercepts of a graph, and the factors of a polynomial.

Benchmark MA.912.A.4.10: Use polynomial equations to solve real-world problems.

We are wrapping up a successful 1st 9 weeks. We have covered the following topics relating to Polynomials and Polynomial Functions:

• Exponents and Monomials
• Operations with Polynomials
• Dividing Polynomials
• Polynomial Functions
• Polynomial Equations
• Roots and Zeros

Student mastery of the topics noted above was assessed through a variety of methods including oral discussion, practical application of concepts and procedures, written tests, and the quarterly benchmark assessments.

## 2nd 9 Weeks (Oct. 29, 2012 - Jan. 17, 2013)

Standard: Logarithmic and Exponential Functions-Understand the concepts of logarithmic and exponential functions. Graph exponential functions, and solve problems of growth and decay. Understand the inverse relationship between exponents and logarithms, and use it to prove laws of logarithms and to solve equations. Convert logarithms between bases, and simplify logarithmic expressions.

Benchmark MA.912.A.8.1: Define exponential and logarithmic functions and determine their relationship.

During the 2nd 9 weeks we will cover a variety of topics relating to Exponential and Logarithmic Functions including:

• Exponential Functions
• Logarithms and Logarithmic Functions
• Properties of Logarithms
• Natural Base e and Natural Logarithms
• Solving Exponential and Logarithmic Equations and Inequalities
• Modeling with Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

Student mastery of the topics noted above will be assessed through a variety of methods including oral discussion, practical application of concepts and procedures, written tests, and the quarterly benchmark assessments.

## Upcoming Field Trip...

### 6225 VectorSpace Boulevard

#### Titusville, FL

In the 3rd 9 weeks, we will discuss topics related to Rational Expressions and Equations in which students will use what has been learned about factoring polynomials. This field trip will allow students to solve real-world problems involving rational equations (mixture, distance, work, interest, and ration), meeting Benchmark MA.912.A.5.7.

Students will participate in a Shields Up! project where they will investigate kinetic energy by designing an impact resistant micrometeoroid and space debris shield, meeting Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, FCAT requirements, and National Science Standards. It will also promote cooperative learning, problem solving, and guided research.

At the Kennedy Space Center, students will explore the Apollo/Saturn V Center, tour NASA areas, and interact with shows and exhibits. During the field trip, students can meet astronauts, watch larger-than-life IMAX® films, strap into the Shuttle Launch Experience, and explore historic rockets.
