Adventures in Math
Lauren Walton, Mathematics Coach
Math is everywhere and opportunities for learning are all around us. Our children are sponges - learning all the time, soaking in the world. We can make some of this learning more intentional by bringing along books and educational games. Here’s one great way to practice math skills intentionally out in the real world and keep your kids engaged at the grocery store.
Here’s a great resource that can be found on the PBS website for parents called Grocery Store Bingo! You can print these boards (feel free to email me if you do not have access to a printer!) and bring them along to the store with you.
Directions from PBS: You’ll notice there are duplicate squares on the board (i.e., item that equals four cups and item sold by quart). This feature lets you decide how fast you want the game to go. Want a quick game? Let the kids cross off multiple squares for the same item. Have a longer trip or think the kids are up for a challenge that day? Require them to find individual items for each square. Either way, they’ll get a chance to flex their math muscles.
Since this game requires children to know the difference between the greater than and less than symbol, this game is best suited for kids ages 7 and up. Click here for a list of math milestones to see if your child is ready.
Try it out and let us know how it goes! We’d love to hear back from you!

have you seen our new sign?
Dunning was originally built as a neighborhood school. It was not built to accommodate the 20 school buses that enter the driveway each morning and afternoon.
For safety, do not enter the driveway from 8:45 am-9:20 am or 2:45 pm-3:20 pm,
unless you are parking in the lot. You may not exit the lot until all buses have left the driveway.
CLIK HERE for the complete guidelines for drop-off and pick-up.

MCAS
MCAS IS STARTING TODAY, MONDAY, APRIL 22ND.
While we want students to take the test seriously and do their best, we do not want them to be anxious. We understand that the scripted directions and test security protocols make the test seem more formal, however the students will be testing with familiar teachers who will do their best to make sure that students are not anxious. Additionally, while MCAS prep has not taken over instruction in the weeks leading up to testing, the teachers have been preparing students regarding the format and language of the test questions, as well as how to navigate the test and use the computer based tools. Ultimately, the best test preparation is high quality teaching and learning. MCAS is snapshot in time and just one measure of learning.
Even though this assessment is a snapshot, one single perspective, it is important that students feel confident and as prepared as possible. There are many ways in which you can help your child put his/her best foot forward on the day of the test. The following guidelines can help set our students up for success:
The night before the test:
- Make sure your child goes to bed on time so he or she is well-rested.
- Keep your routine as normal as possible. Upsetting natural routines may make children feel anxious or unsure of him/herself.
- Be positive and confident knowing your child will do his/her best.
- Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of the test.
The morning of the test:
- Electronic devices are not allowed during testing time. It is recommended that students leave all cell phones and electronic watches/devices at home.
- Get up a few minutes early to avoid rushing and make sure your child arrives to school on time.
- Have your child eat a nutritious breakfast (or encourage them to eat when they get to school).
- Have your child dress in comfortable clothes.
- Be positive and communicate that this is your child’s chance to show what he/she knows. The most important thing is they try their very best!
Thank you for your continued support!
Multicultural Celebration Brunch
For the first time, Saturday May 18, the Dunning Dash and Multicultural Celebration will combine into one big event!
The Multicultural Celebration will take the form of a brunch directly after the Dunning Dash. We need volunteers to bring food to share, to set up during and directly after the Dunning Dash, to help serve food, and to clean up. As always, if anyone is interested in doing a song or dance that represents your family's culture, doing henna tattoos, face painting, or another activity, the more the merrier!
Use this link for the SignUpGenius.
Date: Saturday, May 18th
Time: 10:30am - 1:00pm

CARE & SHARE
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
