December 2022
Happy December! It's nuts to believe that the holiday season is already upon is! This is a busy, but fun month at school and at home. This time of year brings wonderful opportunities to celebrate and honor traditions and perhaps make new ones! Last year we started an outdoor sing along and we will be having out '2nd Annual' sing a long this year as well. This is a great time for our students and staff to bundle up and head outside and sing traditional holiday songs together, led by the wonderful Mrs. Johnson and her fabulous energy!
While many teachers have classroom traditions, such as favorite books and activities, classrooms will also discuss and honor traditions of other cultures, which expands our student's knowledge, curiosity and understanding of others. The act of giving, whether a physical gift, or the gift of time or generosity, is also very important for our children to experience as they develop empathy. There are so many opportunities during the holiday season to learn about others, show gratitude and spread kindness. Here is a wonderful resource on Winter Holiday Resources to Promote Connection and Inclusion from commonsense.org.
May you all have a memorable, healthy and safe holiday season!

Student Absences
It is New York State Educational Law that there must be a written excuse from the parent/guardian for each student absence. The Cazenovia School District is required by the NYS Education Department to keep a written record of student absences.
Please provide a reason for each of your child’s absences, in writing,. You may also send an email or send in a written note with your child upon their return.
Beginning this month, an automated call will be going out to parents/guardians of all students who are absent from school as of 9:00am. This call will serve as a reminder to provide a written reason for your child's absence.

The YMCA program is organized and staffed by Manlius YMCA staff members, and childcare is provided at Burton Street until 5pm. The program costs $325 per month and all costs associated will go directly to the YMCA. A 15% sibling discount also applies with multiple children from the same family. Families may choose to send their children on specific days of the week, or all days of the week, however, the monthly cost remains the same. Financial assistance/scholarships may be available.

Mental Health Team Update
Our students have been working on their social and emotional skills during Hang10 time. The competencies that make up social-emotional learning are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These skills closely align with our LAKER Expectations and are reinforced throughout our school daily.
Mastering these skills increase our students’ Brain Power (cognitive skills), Feelings Power (emotional skills), People Power (interpersonal skills), Citizen Power (character), and Attitude Power (mindset)!
Stay tuned each month in this section where we will be discussing each competency and what that can look like at school, at home, and in the community.
