Greetings from Principal Bogins!

Hello UMHSA Parents and Families,

We are eagerly planning and excited about our Black History month activities, which includes Black History Month Fridays (see below), student created apps from our AP Computer Science Principles class, Black HIstory month facts announcements, and much more! We will culminate with a school-wide Black History Month program on Tuesday, February 28th for students only.

I'm happy to report that 100% of our middle school students have completed their Winter iReady Reading and Math assessments. Please don't STOP now. Parent reports will be released in the next couples of weeks, and we want students to continue their weekly 60 minutes personalized instruction in preparation for the Spring test in May.

I'm happy to report that dates have been confirmed for the Class of 2023 Senior Prom and Commencement as follows:

Senior Prom - Thursday, June 1, 2023 at the Charles H. Wright Museum, Detroit, MI

Commencement - Friday, June 9, 2023 at The Aretha (formerly Chene Park), Detroit, MI

Remember that Mid Winter Break is the week of February 20, 2023; classes resume on Monday, February 27, 2023.

Educationally Yours,

Orlando T. Bogins

News for U!

DIA Field Trip

Mrs. Marsh, UMHSA's Art Department Educator, organized an educational field trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts on Friday, January 13, 2023, specifically to view the "Van Gogh in America" Exhibition. Students were engaged and enlightened by Van Gogh's experience and his works of art, as well as with the other aspects in the DIA in the time allotted. Needless to say, our students and staff came away from this experience with a greater appreciation of art, the history of art, and its cultural impact in modern society. Wherever you are in your life, simply Be inspired, Be reflective, and Be Creative. Art is everything and everywhere!

In the U Spotlight

Bianca S-A - 12th grader

Bianca's goal is to be a surgeon, so she has been enrolled in the dual enrollment program for the last 2 years. When she graduates this June, she will have earned enough credits to enroll as a junior in college!

Nylah T. - 8th grader

Nylah was nominated by Ms. Barrett based on academic improvement she has made in Science, which Nylah attributes to Ms. Barrett's mentoring and resources to help her stay focused and organized.

MATH AT THE U

This month the Math Department wanted to take some time to celebrate Black History Month by honoring the following two notable figures:

As we celebrate Black History Month at our school, please have your student look for posters around the school of apps that our AP Computer Science Principles class have created. These student-created apps all focus on Black History Month in different ways; some highlight current and historical figures in Black and African American history, while other apps take a more personal approach celebrating what Black History Month means to them.

Gladys Mae West

Gladys Mae West is a Mathematician most known for her complex algorithms for modeling the earth's surface that were used as the basis for our modern Global Positioning System (GPS). In total West earned 4 degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a Masters of Mathematics, a second Masters of Public Administration, and a PhD in Public Administration. In 2018, Gladys West was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame for her contributions in the creation of GPS.

Mark Dean

Mark Dean is a Computer Scientist most known for inventing the first gigahertz computer chip, as well as being one of the co-creators of the IBM personal computer in 1981. Based on all of his accomplishments, Dean was named an IBM Fellow in 1995 (the first African-American to earn this accomplishment), inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1997, and was elected a member into the National Academy of Engineering in 2001.

English at The U

In 7th Grade ELA we are reading our next novel, The Skin I'm In. This novel gives us a chance to learn about the importance of self- esteem, self-confidence, and learning to love the skin you're in.

Summary: Maleeka is a seventh-grader who struggles with her body image due to both society and her classmates' colorist bullying. Throughout the novel, Maleeka struggles and ultimately succeeds in standing up for herself and coming to love the skin she's in.

About the Author: Sharon G. Flake has an international reputation as a top author for children and young adults. Her breakout novel, The Skin I'm In, established her as a must-read author among middle and high school students, parents, and educators. She has spoken to more than two hundred thousand young people, and has penned nine novels, numerous short stories, plays, and a picture book.

8th Grade US History completed an extensive research paper on the American Revolution. And with their Wayne State student teacher Miss Weber they have performed Blackout Poetry, a Gallery Walk on the Federalist Era, and are currently creating regional collages of the early Industrial Revolution.

And in the 7th Grade Elective, the students designed a week long National Parks Road Trip. They are now working on writing and presenting a Current Events Newscast.
