TedX Columbus - New This Year

Have your students be a part of the first ever CCS TEDxColumbus event! GRADES 3-6

TEDxColumbus is a showcase for students to present their unique ideas/passions in short (less than 4 minutes) speeches. During the TEDx talks students will incorporate their own research and data to prove how their topic is relevant to a global audience. This year’s theme is “My Ideas are Significant!” Even if one student would like to participate from your school, that is fine! Or, you can have a group, class or club. Consider a parent volunteer who might want to help prepare the students. Once you are registered, the GT Division will provide you with planning updates and information to prepare for the event.

The event will be held at the Columbus Museum of Art May 19, 2016!

TEDx Information Memo - The registration date has been extended to Nov. 30, 2015

Spelling Bee - It's Not Too Late

This information was sent to schools in September. CCS WILL NOT BE HOSTING A DISTRICT SPELLING BEE THIS YEAR. However, it is not too late to register your school at http://spellingbee.com/ so that you have access to Scripps teacher guides, word lists, vocabulary practice and guidelines on organizing a school competition. Schools can still hold a spelling bee if they don't register but this will prevent access to the word lists. The deadline has been extended to December 11, 2015. The registration is paid in full by the Ohio Lottery. All registered school winners will have the option of taking the online test for the opportunity to participate in the regional Spelling Bee held in March at Ohio University. Please email if you would like sample school spelling bee letters, parent letters and any information about organizing a school spelling bee.

Chess Tournaments - Save the Dates!

District Nolan's Knights Elementary Chess Tournament

This tournament will take place Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Linmoor MS. It is open to all experienced elementary chess players. Registration information will be sent to all schools in January.

W. Arthur Cullman Rookie Chess Tournament

This tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Columbus Museum of Art. The competition is for students who are new to chess or who have not competed in a prior tournament. Students must be able to correctly play a complete game of chess.

Don't have a chess club? Your students can learn to play using the Chess Kids website.

Math Showcase - Save the Date

The Gifted and Talented Division is sponsoring a Math Showcase. This will be a day of mathematical problem solving, logical reasoning, mental math and design challenges. There will be a grade 4-5 division and a grade 6-8 division. Save the date - March 10, 2016 at Linmoor MS. More information will be coming soon. Contact Joan Johnson, joajohns@columbus.k12.oh.us or Vonda Spencer-Keane, dspencerkeane5757@columbus.k12.oh.us for more information.

The district has two debate competitions for grades 5-8. The first is December 11, 2015 at Capital University. Information was emailed about this opportunity but the deadline to participate has passed. However, it is NOT TOO LATE to incorporate debate skills and lessons into what you are already teaching and at all grade levels. Email your GT Resource teacher if you would like beginning debate resources. Here is one option that is good for getting started with beginners.
