What and When

The age of exploration began in the 1450's and lasted until the 1640's. During this time, Europeans were spreading to other continent, such as colonies in the Americas, Africa, and parts of Asia.

Major Explorers

Vasco de Gama: Portugese 1498

He reached India by sailing around Africa and opened up a direct trade with Asia.

Ferdinand Magellan: Portugese 1522

He led a Spanish exploration west, circumnavigating the world.

Bartolomeu Dias: Portugese1488

He explored the Indian Ocean.

Christopher Columbus: 1492

He landed on an uncharted continent, America.


Advances in technology, religious, and economic factors were causes for the age of exploration.

Affects on Europe

The age of exploration brought more land and wealth to Europe. Also, the Americas and Asia were colonized by Europe. This gave Europe new places to settle and new resources, like beens, tomatoes, turkey. With the new colonizations, people started moving out of Europe spreading the population.
