Reducing Sun Sensitivity

Sunburn is a type of inflammation. Your diet can increase or decrease your skin's sensitivity to UV rays as well as its ability to repair itself when it does get damaged.


To reduce your sun sensitivity and risk of sun damage, make sure you're eating enough anti-inflammatory foods like:

  1. Healthy fats rich in Omega-3s: fish, eggs, flaxseed, walnuts, or supplements
  2. Other healthy saturated fats: coconut oil or avocado oil
  3. Veggies
  4. Other antioxidant-rich foods: berries, beans, nuts, green tea, and black tea

Staying Hydrated to Reduce Overheating

It is recommended that you drink 12 ounces of water for every 30 minutes you are in the sun. Staying hydrated can help reduce your chances of a heat-related illness. Know the warning signs of heat-related illness and what do in the event you experience these.


Heat Exhaustion: fatigue, nausea, headache, excessive thirst, muscle aches or cramps, weakness, dizziness, fainting, confusion or anxiety, drenching sweats often accompanied by cold clammy skin, and slowed or weakened heartbeat.


What to do- rest in a cool place that has air-condition, elevate your legs above your heart, drink cool fluids, take a cold shower, and remove any unnecessary clothing. If outdoors and unable to do the above, move to the shade and try to find a cool lake or pond to soak in and help bring down your body temperature. Seek emergency medical care if you do not begin to feel better within 1 hour.


Heat Stroke: Increased body temp 103 F or higher, nausea & vomiting, headache, dizziness, flushed skin, rapid heart rate, profound sweating, shortness of breath, confusion or delirium, loss of consciousness, and convulsions.



What to do- heat stroke is a medical emergency, get to the nearest hospital for treatment as soon as possible. Use towels soaked in cold water and drink cold fluids if able while enroute to the hospital.
