ON TOP OF MY TO DO LIST - KNOWING MY STUDENTS AS READERS!
Research your students reading lives and through the process gain a deeper understanding of them as individuals and also where to go next with your teaching!
Here's some ideas on how to make that happen:
READING INTEREST SURVEY
A Reading Survey will give you extremely helpful information about your students, not only to read what they’ve written about themselves as readers, but also to see which questions they struggled over.
Click here for a sample survey! Remember to make a copy BEFORE you edit! :) Email me for more survey ideas and for lower elementary samples.
RECORD READING CONFESSIONS
I recently learned about a strategy called "reading confessions" (much like a reality tv show...love it!) Teachers learn how kids are feeling about their reading and kids deepen their understanding of books by having conversations. Second graders were doing this in Harlem! AWESOME! Teachers set up an IPad for students to record themselves or a friend discussing problems, Aha moments, or parts they loved from their reading. You can collect recordings and snip the clips together with the iMovie app and show it to the class or to parents at conferences. Kids LOVE to see themselves on the big screen!
TALK TALK TALK ABOUT BOOKS
We learn so much about students by listening to them talk about the books they enjoy! Take time to share your love of reading, invite others to visit and share, and also have students talk favorite titles. I recently had the opportunity to talk about some of my favorite books with all the fourth graders at Bursley! The students asked amazing questions and were SO engaged! Thank you for inviting me over to celebrate reading, Jon Scholma!
