Nurse's Corner - From Nurse Lee
I would like to share with you all symptoms of the flu and symptoms of the common cold. The flu season has begun and I thought it would be helpful for everyone to have this knowledge.
According to the CDC, the common cold symptoms begin with a sore throat, nasal congestion and a runny nose. A cough will develop and a fever below 100 degrees can accompany the cold. Dark mucus is natural with a cold and does not mean you have developed a bacterial infection. Cold symptoms usually last about a week. Flu symptoms are the same as cold symptoms but are more severe and come on more quickly and the major difference is a person will run a fever above 100.00 There are different strains of the flu. The only time vomiting and diarrhea occur has been with the Swine flu.
I would like to encourage everyone to get a flu vaccination. It will build up immunity for your body to defend against the flu. I would also like to remind all parents, please keep your student home if they are running a fever above 100.00 and allow the student to rest and stay hydrated. The flu is a serious illness and can result in death.
Please have a safe holiday season and invest your time in obtaining a flu shot!

VTFT Puppet Show
Virginia Teacher for Tomorrow (VTFT) educate and entertain the first graders at Hermitage ES. Princess Anne High Schoolers visited Hermitage on November 6th. These future teachers were part of a group who created and performed puppet shows focusing on social skills topics such as antibullying, self-esteem, and how to avoid judging others on their looks. All of the students enjoyed the puppet show performances and hope these future teachers will visit again!
Guidance Corner - From Mrs. Blauert
Can you define Citizenship?
Good citizenship is an important quality to instill in our young people. VBCPS has initiated the “Principles of American Citizenship” to highlight the traits that build good citizenship. A student in each class is selected every month for demonstrating a specific quality that shows “Good Citizenship”. In recognition the Guidance department provides a certificate and token to be presented by our principal to each selected class representative for demonstrating the character trait each month:
October: Diligence
November: Respect
December: Kindness
January: Fairness
February: Honesty
March: Cooperation
April: Self-Control
May: Trustworthy
School Counselors discuss these in class guidance lessons to build awareness and character every day. Teachers also nominate students to receive the “Student of the Month” award for a variety of accomplishments and achievements in their class.
