In Our Classes This Week
Both grades are working on opinion/persuasive writing. We started this last week by expressing preferences and students will choose one of the given topics to write about to start with. They will work on drafting strong topic sentences, creating interest in their reader, expressing strong reasons with supporting details and writing a strong conclusion. Please help your child with this by questioning their reasons, helping them come up with strong points and reminding them that the opinions they orally express can easily be converted into writing! This will be an ongoing project over the next few weeks.
Third graders have been working on the verbs saber and conocer, both meaning "to know" but used in different contexts. They will be reading the play Dos oseznos this week.
Fourth graders will start reading Montañas: sobrevivir en el monte Everest tomorrow and will be working on characteristics of informational texts. We will continue working on stem-changing verb. Be sure to practice, practice, practice!
Science
We started a new unit on Energy by first reviewing states of matter and changes to states of matter. Last week we saw potencial and kinetic energy (energía potencial y cinética) and I was very impressed at how quickly our students could explain and identify these. This week we will be looking at sound energy.
Math
Our current focus is on lines and angles. Students should be able to identify four different types of angles by sight and measurement. We have been working on using a protractor, which each student should be taking home with them each day to complete their homework. Looking for ways to practice? Give your child a measurement and have them draw the angle for you or draw an angle for your child to measure. As always, IXL is an excellent resource for additional practice.
