Bring Back the Joy in Teaching
STAFF SPAWTLIGHT: Patty Whalen
I was born in Lewiston where both of my parents were teachers. I have two younger sisters, Jana, who lives in Prior Lake with her husband Gregg and my nephew Brody and Sarah, who lives and teaches 2nd grade in Virginia.
I went to college in Milwaukee at a small private school. At the time of my graduation from high school I was sure I wanted to work in the hospitality industry so I declared a major in the hotel restaurant management department. By the time I got to my junior year reality had sunk in and I realized that the hotel industry was not as glamorous as my young brain had believed but didn’t know what else to do. After graduation I came back to Lewiston and worked at a variety of places and helped my mom who was the GT coordinator in the Lewiston school district. I coached Math Masters and Academic Triathlon and taught enrichment classes. It was then that I gave up the fight to not be teachers like my parents and went back to school to get my teaching license.
After subbing for a year, I moved back to Milwaukee and taught there for 8 years before moving into administration. I was the Curriculum and Technology Coordinator for three years and then a building administration for 5. It was during this time that I met my husband, Tom.
In 2014 I applied for an associate principal position in the Rochester Public School district to appease my family who all wanted me to move back to the area. I was excited to be offered an interview and then a position at John Adams! I am still absolutely thrilled to be part of the John Adams family!
