Notes from Onondaga Road

Message From The Onondaga Road School Principal
Hello, Onondaga Road Families!
Please take a look at the "Upcoming Events" section below for some highlights for the upcoming month. We will send notes and flyers home with details about most of the activities we have listed as they get closer, so be sure to check backpacks, too!
Thanks to the many people who joined at our first OR PTA meeting last week. We have several fun events and activities planned for the year, so it's great to have many hands to help. If you are wondering how to get involved, feel free to join us at next month's PTA meeting on October 20.
Our daily routines are well underway, and I see that there are a few things we can do to continue to improve our dismissal process. Remember to be here at 3:10 if you are picking your child up from school so we can get cars out of the bus loop as safely and quickly as possible for our 3:20 bus dismissal. If you do pick your child up, please remain in your car so as to not hold up cars and buses behind you. Please consider a right-hand turn out of our bus loop or from Kent Place, which is much safer than trying to turn left at that heavy traffic time. Buses pull in promptly at 3:20, so anything you can do to keep the process moving safely is much appreciated!
Sincerely,
Jeannette Clark
Safety First!
Each year we practice several safety drills and protocols. I’m sure your child has mentioned that the fire alarm is very loud (by design)! Students are receptive and responsible while we practice how to evacuate the building in a timely, calm manner, and they understand their role. Officer Charlie was able to get into most classrooms, not only to build relationships and rapport with our children, but to help them understand his role in our building. In several classrooms, he or the teacher read the book The Lockdown Drill, written by Deputy Becky Coyle. This is a child-friendly book where the student characters practice safety and responsibility just like we do!
Our School Expectations
We continue to teach and review our school behavior expectations, or rules, in all settings in and out of the building: Be respectful. Be responsible. Be safe. That’s it! Those are the three school rules!
We teach the children how to act respectfully, responsibly and safely in all school settings: classrooms, cafeteria, playground, hallway, bus, assemblies, and arrival/dismissal locations. We hold high expectations at school, just as you would at home, and we have some incentives to motivate students. Be sure to ask your child about the Golden Spatula and Bus Bucks!

Emergency Responder Day
Wednesday, October 5 is half-day of school for our students, and that morning we will have many guests visiting our school to teach our children about their work in our community. Don’t be alarmed if on that day you see lots of emergency responders or vehicles at our school like Camillus Police, a fire truck, ambulance, SWAT vehicle, State Troopers K9 Unit, and County Sheriff. Any or all of these emergency responders will be here talking to our children on October 5!
