NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
August 5, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful summer full of fun adventures and rejuvenating mountain time! I can’t believe it’s already time to start school back up again. While we were all away, the construction team was busy all summer long and our school is ready and complete with all our updates. The new playgrounds look fantastic, as does our new office, new preschool rooms (with bathrooms!) and new paint and carpeting throughout the building. I can’t wait for you and the students to see it!
We also did some new hiring over the summer. Please join me in welcoming Emily Barth, our new preschool teacher. Emily comes to us from Mapleton Early Childhood Center and before that the Boulder Journey School. She has 16 years of experience working with young children.
We also hired a new part-time third-grade teacher. Ms. Albright will be working mornings this year so she can spend more time at home with her new baby, Gavin. We’re thrilled to announce that Danielle Petrovic will be her teaching partner for the afternoons. Danielle has experience teaching at Nederland Middle-Senior High and Angevine Middle School.
Johnnie LeFaiver is our new Community Liaison this year, working primarily with preschool families. We’re very excited that she will be in this new role as Kristi Vendetti works full time for EFAA (Emergency Family Assistance Association).
Lastly, we also have a few shifts in our wonderful team of paraeducators. Deb Hadford, a long time para at NES, will now be working full time with the ICAN/ILC/Autism program. We will be hiring someone to replace her in the upcoming week.
Please introduce yourself to new staff as you see them around the school!
Emily Barth
WELCOME!!!!!
Danielle Petrovic

Supply Drop Off and Back to School Night
In an effort to be more inclusive and welcoming of all families, we have redesigned our Back to School night event this year. This evening has traditionally been challenging for families to attend due to lack of childcare and it has been equally challenging for us to provide adequate supervision for students. Therefore, we have planned a more inclusive event. Our Open House will start with a community dinner outside with parents and children. We’re also excited to highlight our newly renovated playground that evening! After dinner and teacher introductions, we will all move inside the building for open house-style classroom visits. Children can show you their classrooms and introduce you to their teachers. Important classroom and grade level information will be provided in handouts, rather than the traditional lecture format. Teachers will be available for informal conversations. Our hope is that this more inclusive event will build stronger connections between home and school. The Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 22th from 5:30-7: 30 pm.
Additionally, we will be reformatting our supply drop off/meet & greet/popsicle event the day before school starts. Many of you have reached out to me that this was a difficult way to start off the year because it was in the afternoon and working families could not get here. Teachers also expressed that it was challenging to receive all classroom supplies at once. For the 2019-2020 school year, we will have an optional supply drop off the day before school starts. We will not have popsicles or other community information as we’ve had in the past. We would like to invite students to bring supplies with them for the first few days of school or even bring them to the Open House on August 22nd. The optional school supply drop off will be Tuesday, August 13th from 2:30-3:30.
Volunteer Needed!
Represent NES in the District Parent Council (DPC)!
The Boulder Valley District Parent Council (DPC) provides a monthly forum and lively exchange of ideas for all schools in Boulder Valley School District.
A representative from each school in the district is invited to attend a once-a-month meeting during the school year to join the Superintendent of Schools, along with special guests, to discuss and examine timely and relevant topics that affect the students and schools of BVSD. Our meetings are open to the public and we encourage all to attend.
The DPC provides a truly unique opportunity for BVSD parents, staff, teachers, students, and leadership to exchange and share ideas and views in a professional and open setting.
DPC meetings are held one Wednesday night of every school month 6:30-8: 00 pm in the BVSD Education Center located at 6500 Arapahoe, Boulder, CO 80303
Please join us to learn about issues that are important to our students!
The first District Parent Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18, 2019, from 6:30-8: 00 pm at the Education Center.
