Head of School Weekly Update
May 11, 2019
Westminster Family,
May is such a full month for all of our students, parents, faculty, and staff. The many annual events at this time of year remind us how quickly our opportunity to be a part of your child’s life rushes by each year. These events also create times to recognize the gifts and talents of our students and to honor their accomplishments and diligence. Each one is unique and special.
The band concert on Tuesday night was wonderful. The quality of the band program is a testimony to the students and Mr. Price’s vision and leadership. Multiple groups presented special pieces that were amazing. The sense of family these guys have is distinct. One of our students, Amanda Miskovish, was selected as a Freshman for the top all-state band recently. To see our students surpass students from around the state is another indicator of their hard work. Congratulations and thank you, band!
Wednesday at the Lower Campus was our annual 5th-grade chapel where they are honored and challenged to continue to lead and impact others as they transition to the Upper Campus. One of our parents, Rickey Brewington, has led a monthly prayer group for the past several years and he uses this opportunity to present each student with a devotional book. He also does this for our seniors right before graduation. I’ve had many alumni tell me that this was a true gift for them as they moved on from WCA.
This past week was the state championship for the esports team. Being an inaugural year, our students were competing against teams from all 7 classifications. Even with that, they made the elite 8. Congratulations on a great season, and thank you to Clay Durrett for leading the team!
Many of you were in attendance with us at the girls soccer semifinal game on Thursday. Our ladies had an incredible and historic year. They have represented their Lord, families, and school well. Congratulations to the coaches and the team! They achieved much and had a blast doing so.
The Westminster math team had a high level of success highlighted by first-place finishes in the Calhoun Community College Invitational in the fall and the Alabama Statewide Mathematics competition this spring. Congratulations to all the team and thank you to Doug Madison and Michelle Goode for leading this group.
Congratulations to senior Macy Kate Toon! She tied the AHSAA record for the most consecutive softball games played. Congratulations also to Ben Conway (8th grade) for qualifying for the State Golf Tournament at the North Substate Tournament.
Finally, congratulations to our track team for finishing well at the State Tournament last weekend. We are thankful for coaches like Corderyl Sunday who pour so much time into our student-athletes. The following athletes were winners at the state level:
Auston Leslie - 2019 3A State Champion Triple Jump, 2019 3A State Champion 300 meter Hurdles, and 2019 3A State Runner-Up Long Jump
Alex Stanley - 2019 3A State Champion 200 Meter Dash, and 2019 3A State Runner-up 100 Meter Dash
Kyle Van Kirk - 2019 3A State Runner-up 3200 Meter Run
Thank you for your continued prayers for our former Head of School and School Board President, Ron Klein. He had another small setback so he and his wife will remain in Utah for a few more days. He is still expecting a full recovery from the two surgeries and hopes to be able to travel home soon.
We are looking ahead to the final days of this school year. Commencement is Monday, May 20th at 6:00 pm at the VBC.
Have a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day to all of our Westminster moms!
