May is Mental Health Month
As we continue to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, I am including a highlight on what mental health is:
So, what is mental health?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:
Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
Family history of mental health problems
Mental health challenges are different from just being sad. They are more severe and longer-lasting and can have a large impact on daily life.
Some common mental health challenges are anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance use, and experiencing trauma. They can affect a person’s usual way of thinking, feeling, or acting, and interfere with daily life.
A mental health challenge left unchecked can become a more serious problem that can also impact physical health.
It’s important to look after our own mental health and encourage others to do the same.
If you are struggling with mental health, don’t lose hope. You can always talk to a trusted adult. Your school social worker, counselor, school psychologist, teacher and principal are all people you can turn to for help at school.
